McCaffery?s reinforcements coming up huge - The Daily Iowan

I saw the post game with Crean and was surprised to hear they didn't follow the scouting report on Basabe:

Indeed, the 6-7 forward's play was crucial. Indiana head coach Tom Crean said he wasn't at all surprised by Basabe's play, despite the up-and-down season he has produced.

"We didn't follow the scouting report on him," Crean said. "[Basabe] is a very capable player, there's no question about that. He caught the ball too deep, which was a problem. We let him get the ball and get turn the way he wants to turn, and we can't do that."

Following the scouting report on Basabe more closely might have helped the Hoosiers, but no scouting report could've helped Crean's squad with what McCaffery did next.

Who would have thought Iowa needed Stokes, Stubbs, and Brommer to play meaningful minutes in order to beat Indiana.

I was sitting in my chair in the newsroom, just staring at the TV slack-jawed when I saw Stubbs and Stokes out there. And my jaw hit the floor when Stokes scored.

Yeah, I had thought Fran had lost his mind. But then laughed when Indiana was unable to take advantage of that lineup.

I am still trying to get my mind around Basabe calling his friends slimes and Marble wanting his slimies to hit him up at 3 am. Glad to see the players have good chemistry and McCaffrey can take a joke. I might bust out a "what's up slime?" text to my wife to see how that goes over. Basabe has struggled, but seems like a good kid and I hope he gets his slimes jacked up Thursday night.

BTW, props to the bench guys for chipping in. Stokes played well in the PTL and is long, lanky, quick dude with hops that won't get abused on D when he is spelling others.

I have to admit that when I saw that I was shocked and after a pause all I could say was "...Are we giving up?"

Not to mention Brommer was in as well.

I thought maybe we were just trying to give some playing time to guys who never played but worked hard everyday in practice. Kind of like you would do if you are up by 40 with 5 minutes left. That kind of thing.

But I thought they actually did quite well.

Yeah thoughts of that guy posting last weak on how Iowa had nothing to play for as an argument for Olaseni to play more passed through my mind.

My first thought was, well Fran obviously feels this season is over.

Wow. I totally read it differently. My thought was that as long as we were ahead by five or more (he put them in when we were up 18-10), he was going to rest his top-line guys as much as possible. We were only seven deep for that game, and he wanted to keep some gas in the tank if we were going to be able to take it home. Turns out he was right.
