Frans Recruiting

I agree that getting some American black players from urban areas is good to see...only Clemmons had that background until this year, when Trey joined in.....simply because I think this will help create more of a comfort zone for recruits in the future.

Lets face it, Iowa is a school in a 97% white state, with almost exclusively white fan base, etc.
I suspect it might be a little daunting for some recruits, who come from urban areas, to see virtually no familiar faces in town.

Now, we are changing the ''culture'' a little bit in terms of diversity. Clemmons was the host for our black recruits this time around, with Pete hosting his friend Trey. In the future, we have more hosts to choose from as we continue to pursue needed athletes from out of state. Iowa does not have a lot of high profile preps on the horizon, so we have to go out of state. I think this class really gets that shift moving.

Actually the State of Iowa is ~87% white, not 97, but I get your point. http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/19000.html

I do.

Sure, not all highly rated players are guaranteed to turn out, and there are enough 3* recruits that become good players. That's overstating the obvious. That said, I'll take my chances with a class full of 4-5* recruits. I'm betting 9 times out of 10 (or more) the class with 4-5* recruits is going to kick the snot out of the class made up of 2-3* recruits. I remember going back once and looking at all of our 4* recruits in the past 10-15 years or so, and those were arguably the best players we've had in that stretch. Brunner, Horner, Haluska, Tyler Smith, Pierre Pierce.. I'm talking "on court" here with Pierce.

I still think it's more telling what other schools offered these guys than the star system.

Hutton was offered by Bo at Wisconsin. That's not insignificant.
Fleming was offered by Donovan at Florida. A pretty good talent evaluator is Donovan.
Moss was offered late by Fred and Pearl. Those guys have a track record at bringing in athleticism and talent.
Can't remember the offers to the other recruit by I don't think they were all MAC level team.

I think we're going to be alright.

I think a more accurate barometer of talent would be their ranking after the season. This is all subjective and based on their performance in the last season and summer camps. Let them have a senior season and watch their rankings go up. I really like this class and add in Ellingson who is almost sure to RS, and we'll have some good, young players next year.

I think with Fran, he counts on building that chemistry and having all players contribute and rotate in and out. I think he tries to find the right pieces ... Of course, he would like some 4 or 5 stars sprinkled in but for the most part I think we will see Fran bring in 3-star guys and then coach them up. I really do like the potential look that this latest class may bring.

Wagner had a Minnesota offer if I remember right. Not any big time schools after him, but he did have some OK offers.

Fran already has us competing with the best teams in the nation with a bunch of no name recruits that no one wanted. He also has shown that he is great at spoting players before the recruiting services do. Imagine how fun it's going to be when Fran starts hitting on all these close misses.

We cannot put lipstick on this. The class has some decent players, but every Big 10 team (just by being a Big 10 team) can do that. The class is worse than virtually all other classes in our conference, and worse than ISU's. Sure, the players might develop...and some are "from Chicago," but none of the Chicago kids are among the top 10 in the state of Illinois, let alone the country. Until we get some studs, we are going to have to rely on development.

I don't have to put lipstick on this class to gloss it up by any stretch of the imagination. When all is said and done recruiting rankings are just a slight indicator of who the players actually become.

Iowa got a shooter, which, in my opinion is an absolute must. Hutton is a guy that is an on the cusp Top 150 kid and was pursued by some very good schools.

This class symbolizes a shift in what kind of player Iowa has been getting to what they got...Iowa is evolving into an athletic roster, while maybe having some offensive limitations, but with a lot of upside. You can't teach athleticism, but you can teach fundamentals along with how to play within a system and within themselves.

The longer Fran is at Iowa the more players seem to understand who they are and play within themselves. This class looks to fit that bill, but on a different level athletically than classes of past.

I am not all that fascinated by rankings...it is nice to have those guys with accolades, but for everyone of those guys that are 4-5* there are at least 5, 3* kids that outperform each one that fails...not everything is a given with rankings, but it looks nice and after that nothing matters until they play the game.
