Fran's "Fast Paced, Exciting Style of Play?"

Fans looked the other way at Fran's recruiting failures and inability to win the close games because we were so disgusted with Lick's slow ball style. Fran talked about implementing his fast paced, exciting style of play. He was personable and excitable on the bench and has a great knowledge for the game.

Most of us agreed that it is way more exciting to watch the Hawks lose 98-95 than to watch Lick ball where we we win 40-39. Sure, virtually none of Fran's recruits had offers from other Big 10 schools, but they were "long" and worked with his "system." Well here's a news flash: we are 14th in the Big 10 in shooting percentage and 10th in scoring!! That's right, Fran's playing the same slow ball, with the same mostly white roster than Lick played and was run out of town for. If Lick had not got Devyn Marble to commit, Fran would be batting .000 for having athletes on his 5 teams who could create their own shot. In fact, the only difference between Fran's team and Licks is that Fran has been lucky enough to have relatively highly rated Iowa high school kids who wanted to play for Iowa regardless of who the coach was.

I agree about playing up tempo but some of the kids we have may not be capable of doing this. When you lack talent and athleticism you tend to slow it down.

If you recall many in this fan base freaked out whenever we gave up a ton of points by playing fast in previous seasons instead of enjoying it. Remember the Indiana and Minnesota games? There was an outrage about playing defense. Well now we have that emphasis again and how is that working?

Give me a 105-93 loss any day over 56-44.

Uh, wut? Last seven games:

56-44L
90-75L
67-44W
77-47W
60-55W
77-44W
70-49W

I spy exactly one game where we scored less than 50 points. There's plenty enough to be ****** off about right now, without making things up out of thin air.

As for losing uptempo rather than losing while playing slow ball? That was good enough for the first couple years. At this point, losing is losing.

At this point, losing is losing.

No doubt that losing is losing. Anyway you cut it, it stinks.

I think there is a valid reason to wonder about putting our most athletic line up out there from what we do have and trying to 'muck it up' some. If we can get some easy baskets and see the ball go through the hoop then maybe this sparks our shooting from the perimeter some? Might provide some energy.

Didn't take long for teams to adjust to our fast paced transition game....

And our half court offense is torturous to watch.....

I feel sorry for our next opponent....

Ha. I assume he was looking at our opponent's scores.

IOwa's definitely not getting the break away baskets they have the past couple years. They should just go Grinnell style & run & gun & get a shot off every 8 seconds!!

It is not just about our transition game alone but speeding teams up over 40 minutes. Getting a few turnovers and quick shots that turn into transition opportunities including open looks. Probably would not work but playing half court all game nets 44 pts and 3 second half baskets.

I am not talking just some token pressure either. Give me the real thing. Does anyone remember the days under Davis of getting down by 15-20 and making a huge comeback?

Iowa is 82nd in tempo this season. That puts them in the top 25% of all division 1 teams for tempo. Part of the issue is some of the teams they have played (UNI - 345th in tempo) and part of the issue is that NCAA basketball is being played at the slowest pace in most of our lifetimes.
