Fran's eye for talent

I think as the Dayton coach said, "How did White get out of Ohio" is going to be a theme for a few more years.

I also think this coaching staff, and Fran in particular, has an eye for seeing talent that others don't. White is a prime example. And I think we will see more of that next year with some of our "lesser" recruits".

I think we have some "sleepers" and we are in for quite a ride the next several years. It's going to be fun and THANK YOU coach for bringing back Iowa Basketball!!!

I agree.

Fran has also stated many times he won't fill scholarships just to fill them....only players that "fit" his system will get offers.

While I said "who?" when he was announced as coach, I quickly became a Fran fan...and like him more and more as time goes by. We got us a winner, and Iowa basketball is going to be exciting and WINNING for years to come.

I thought it was Dillards eye for talent that got White to Iowa. I thought Dillard liked White so much he told Fran about him.

Well there you go, Fran's eye of bringing in a great coaching staff is the reason why Dillard told him about White in the first place...

Agree with the OP.

White = cornerstone of our future rise to March Madness.

Basabe = potential is there to be a solid player

Cartwright = great fill-in during years 1 and 2

Ogs = future Kent Mccausland?

The big O = future Erik H?

Dev = 19 yr old whose best ball is still ahead of him.

I think so far Fran has taken what he could get...White was a midmajor recruit. Yeah, a lot of people missed on him...but that was because they didn't have to take him and saw something in other players that was more obvious.

the bigger challenge will be once the program gets on solid footing, and you can get higher 'quality' players...that's when taking an Aaron White when you could have had a player others rate higher, that's where the eye for talent shows, if they perform.

I think we'll know more after the '12 class works it way out. Clemmons, Ingram and Myer (Meyer? whatever) had I think one power conference offer between them other than Iowa. If even 1 or 2 of these guys work out Fran's eye-for-talent legend grows.

White may have been recruited "by" midmajors but don't lump in the catagory of a mid major player, if you look at his body of work over his 3 years in HS, he was solid, he got over looked because he did not play in many AAU events due to a broken wrist, that and he went on a growth spurt his senior year. he was also the MVP of the Ohio/Kentucky All
Star Game.

I want to congratulate Gary Barta on his eye for talent. He brought in a mid-major coach and that coach is now turning around a sleeping giant!

come on guys its all about having right attitudes and it has nothing to do with talents. anyone can have talents but do they have the right attitudes to play for the hawks... all of you keep saying talents win games...
you gotta have the right attitudes to go to school and learn and have right attitudes to live life the way god intended you.... you just gotta have right attudes to go to practices and work out in gym or weight .

Let's hope Oglesby can shoot off the dribble.

Let's be honest about Aaron White here. Pleasant surprise? Absolutely. Solid, high-effort player? No doubt. Enjoy having him play for Iowa? Yes. But, he is not the cornerstone of a team. Not at all.

White is not a star, but he is a supporting player that every team needs to be good. That value cannot be overstated.

The only player currently on the roster who logged significant minutes that could potentially be classified as a cornerstone is Roy Marble, simply because of his playmaking ability. The beauty of Fran McCaffrey's Hawkeyes is that the system doesn't revolve around one or two guys.
