Fran's Demeanor and Approach

I will be the first one to give Fran credit for bringing Hawkeye basketball back from the depths of the Lickliter era. For that I don't think we can ever thank him enough.

With that being said, there is something about him that just turns me off. I don't know if it is his constant screaming at players and officials or his attitude that he exudes in dealing with the press or certain circumstances or what. Don't get me wrong, it is important for a coach to get after players and officials. I am sure we have all played for a coach like that. You have to do that to a point. I just don't feel Fran's teams respond to him especially when he starts to go bezerk. Plus, in multiple years, Hawkeye teams have flat out melted at the end of the season. To a point, you have to put some of the blame on the players. A little toughness goes a long way. It just makes me wonder, though, if Fran's personality and attitude eventually wears his teams out.

Fran didnt say a word yesterday during the opening 5 minutes and Iowa was playing horrendous basketball on both ends

Iowa looks like a beaten down team. Whether that is Fran or something else, I don't know. It's happened before so it's easy to put it on him. Just my 2 cents.

He laid into them later in the game though. Really got mad near the end and the players folded.

Im sure he was boiling inside during the opening of the game. I honestly think he holds it in as best he can because his players are so fragile. There's only so much a guy can take before he comes unglued.

He kept Sapp on a short leash down the stretch, dude was a turnover machine yesterday.....I think sometimes, Fran is just looking for some sort of leadership (or a boost) by anyone....he hasn't gotten it by who he should at times...Early in the game you can probably get away with it, and Iowa showed signs of coming back and taking the lead, so I know it's in them to do that, i t's the players, not Fran....I've also thought, at times, he simply has the wrong personnel in their for these special plays/sets....

I'm glad Fran takes the winning and losing personally. He wouldn't be much of a coach if he didn't I'm looking forward to the rest of this year, and watching next years team. They are good this year, and I think they have the potential to be better next year once they get some experience. Its nice that the coaches get to work with the players over the summer now.

Fran's yelling and demeanor during and after games indicates he is tight about things. He's the leader of the team so it's only logical to assume that the players are emulating his tightness.

I like Fran but just once I'd like to see him fall on his sword and tell the press the loss was his fault, to take pressure off of the players. Just don't think that's in his DNA.

His demeanor has gotten a ton better compared to his first few years, I was so embarrassed by the tirades. I can live with most of his game antics now, I would be curious however what practices are like. The way he treats the press sometimes aka "the little people" does still rub me wrong though. How he is short with them and just comes across as a bully. No one likes losing, but he is getting paid very well to act professionally with the media.

Fran gives 6 years of good interviews with a handful of jerk comments and now he treats the press like crap.

I wonder why these seniors played so great for most of this season and finally had too much of Fran's yelling with 6 games left in their careers. I guess 3 and 3/4 years is all the yelling a guy can take.

They always say players take on the personality of the coach.

See Jok & his pushing incident when he had 4 fouls.

You're a few years late for being the first to give Fran credit for bringing us back.

This thread again? If Fran yells and wins, then people say "he fights for his players and really has their backs." If he yells and loses then, "he's scaring the players and they are folding under pressure."

Izzo does it just as much and actually gets in players faces during games. Sparty players don't fold. WV players don't fold.

When a senior says after the game they didn't have
...enough energy

...good focus

...learn from this and get better

...we didn't match their intensity

then I agree. Fran yelling at them isn't going to force them to do what only they as senior players must provide.

If they haven't learned from the previous two years and fall into the same late-game and late-season and flaccid big ten tourney appearances then the failure is on them. Not Fran.

I don't put it on Fran as much as the seniors. The 4 starters played significant minutes two years ago as sophomores when we melted down the first time. They just can't seem to handle the pressure. Woodbury/Gesell/Clemmons were downright brutal yesterday. I mean, 2-20, seriously??? At least 5 of those were layups, too.

That's a pretty isolated incident wouldn't you say? Are players are known way more for being weak than being tough guy bullies?

??? Huh?? What are you saying?

Do you realize that bullies ARE weak?? They feel inferior and inadequate so they bully to feel superior. And they often do it for an audience. Makes them feel even better.

I will not provide you a link. Go educate yourself.
