Fran's defense

we arent paying lick everything we would if he didnt already have another job. i believe he is an assistant somewhere.

announcers made the comment of the night saying the iowa defense goes with their offense. when the offense is clicking so is the defense. we are still young and they are learning to bring the defensive energy night in and night out when the offense isnt clicking. it is much easier to get in a passing lane when your shot is falling.

Iowa's defense is good when other teams shoot 20% from 3. This season long defensive slump is more than a little disconcerting. It's either talent, desire or coaching, as we can't always blame it on the other team shooting lights out. NW made us look slow, unathletic and unprepared and that was all in the first 10 minutes of the game.

You don't have a clue about the game. Hawkeyes shot 51% overall and 50% from 3 point range. They won previous 2 games with worst shooting. Check stats before commenting next time. Hope your not a PE major planning on coaching.

I think it is much more cyclical than that.

I think the O feeds off of the D and getting turnovers which allows Iowa to run and get easy buckets. This in turn incites the D to pick it up and play better. Chicken or the egg? I think they are simultaneously affecting each other.

Good analysis.

Once this team becomes more consistent (it WILL happen, fans need to be patient..it may still take another season or two) the defense should get better.

sometimes it is hidden stats that mean more than a shooting percentage. we may have shot a decent percent but we took less shots and we didnt get into the fastbreak and we didnt get as many free throws as usual. if you rely completely on percentages you dont know much about math (math teacher and coach here). if you are about percentages do you want the guy who shoots 8 for 10 or the guy that shoot 16 for 20? we shot 50% and scored 64 pts. id rather shoot 40% and score in the 70s because that means we are probably at the line more.

I think a team that wants to play uptempo is usually going to give up more points..but Iowa's problems are in the half court..and that just seems to be a matter of focus. Iowa's players collapse into similar areas too often, usually in the lane...too many guys come off their man to help, which leaves wide open drive and kicks.

Part of this begins with on-ball defending, an area where Iowa is not that good right now...if you don't allow your man to get into the lane, others won't have to help so much.

I really don't think the defense in the first half was all that bad. It was at times but when you are continually having to deal with ball screen after ball screen that can happen. Then we went to zone in the second half and it was lights out. We turned it over in the first half like 10 times and they had a lot of fast break points as a result. This team can play good man to man defense and they show it at times like the first half of the Minnesota game. But it needs to be that way every game and it goes back to Fran's comments about being tough night in and night out in this league. The deer in the headlights against their zone is inexcusable.
