Frank Martin of K State?

If Jamie Dixon or Scott Drew turn us down, I would love to get Frank Martin of Kansas State. He has improved on the turnaround project that Bob Huggins started and is a dynamite recruiter. He has great AAU ties as he was a former AAU coach. He also has a lot of ties to Florida. Manhattan is not a great destination and IMO IA City is a lot more attractive of a place to reside. With our renovations and $ we can offer, why not give it a shot? Frank Martin was the reason Michael Beasley went to K-State and with this year, he has proved he is not a one hit wonder. He is tough, intense and passionate & would recruit the kind of athletes we have been missing the last 4 + years. Anyone else think he would be a good choice?

He seems like type of guy that if you cross, you go sleep with the fishes.

His eyes look like he has no soul...probably a very nice fella, but kinda disturbs me :)

He is very intense on the court, but if you watch one of his press conferences he is rather laid back. I doubt he leaves KSU. He's got a good thing there and is on the verge of becoming a consistent powerhouse.

Honestly, of the Big12 coaches, the only one worth while that I can see leaving their school would be Travis Ford of OSU. He doesn't get the fan support down there and hasn't been there long enough to really get settled. I just don't see Drew or Martin going anywhere right now with the situation they've worked themselves into. Perhaps you could throw money at Anderson of Missouri, he's a good coach that also doesn't get much support from the fans as of late.

Why is Martin an NCAA sanction waiting to happen, Jon?

Maybe you can elaborate, because I have seen you make a imilar comment on this board in the past month and you didn't elaborate then either. I am not trying to dog anyone who says this. I would just like for them to tell me why they feel that way.

Is it because you can't be that connected to AAU teams without being crooked? Is it because they pay a guy that was connected to an AAU team more money than any other assistant coach in college basketball?

Help me out, because I am in KC and the guy looks pretty honest and hard working to me. No one around here that is reputable talks about his program having any hint of impropriety.

But I have heard a very reputable journalist in Sports Radio 810's Soren Petro say on the air that Drew is not only the most hated coach in the B12 but that he is a cheater. This guy, Petro, is not an irresponsible loudmouth talk radio guy, either. He thinks out what he says and always has a reason for saying it that isn't grandstanding. If he says it, I would believe it.

So, I'll ask again, why the dislike for Martin? If it is just a hunch, fine. But Jon and I think a lot alike on things like this. And I'll tell you what, I think Drew is shady at best. I have heard his old man cheated at Valpo and so does he. So I haven't heard anything like that about Martin, other than some impropriety in high school coaching over ten years ago (maybe longer). But I have heard a lot about Drew.

So I have given my reasons for not liking Drew. Can anyone say something of substance about Martin, other than he is an NCAA sanction waiting to happen? I don't think that comment is based on anything other than what you perceive from looking at him and knowing he is a really good AAU recruiter.

By the way, he won't leave KSU anyway. He just got an extension and raise, and he appears to be very loyal to them at this point.

Anderson would be an interesting choice. We would certainly win more than we have with Alford and Lickloser. Martin's not going anywhere K-State gave him his first Head coach job at the D1 level and their fans are crazy excited he'd be a fool to leave. Don't know if Travis Ford is the real deal or not at OSU but they play exciting ball. I don't know Drew's situtation at Baylor but it seems as though we could offer enough to make him interested. Talk about resurrection jobs! What about Turgeon at A&M clearly a Football school you'd think we might be able to get him interested.

Frank Martin is a great coach, but I think he stays loyal to K-State, at least for a few years. A couple years ago, he was a high school coach in Miami and now he's a #2 seed in the NCAA tournament. When Huggins left K-State, the only reason Martin was promoted to head coach was so they could keep Michael Beasley committed to their school. It's turned out great for K-State, as Martin is a legitimate good coach. They also have one of the best recruiters in the nation in Dalonte Hill. If they keep Martin and Hilll together at K-State, they will be good for a long time.

Also, I agree with Thawki in regards to Martin beeing unfairly judged as a cheater. This guy is very grateful for all the opportunities he's been given at K-State, and I really doubt he puts his coaching position on the line by cheating. And like I said, he has one of the best recruiters in the nation in Dalonte Hill on his staff, so there's no need for them to cheat to get talent on their roster.

Tap,

I have had enough conversations with AAU coaches that lead me to have zero interest in Frank Martin. I've heard enough stories from his college days, and then go back to his high school days where he was involved in a recruiting scandal in Miami. He was never 'convicted' of wrongdoing, but he lost his job. Sort of a 'let's just move on. We'll drop the litigation, if you just go away.'

Put that in a box and close it for a second...I don't want a Frank Martin type on the Iowa sidelines. The guy uses the F-bomb in seemingly every sentence you see a camera zoomed in on his face. He seems like he is one of those guys on the lunatic fringe.

I am not saying a coach can't swear..most people let one fly now and then. But my gosh man, the guy seems like a nutter.

I would take 25 + wins and a few f-bombs over less wins than the football program. Swearing isn't as embarassing as 10 wins in 32 games.

I agree Martin operates on the margins although I think Drew does as well. If the Hawks did hire Martin, I would be interested to see what the roster looks like next year:)

0% chance of this hire. KSU only has one senior and they have a great class coming in. I love Frank's emotion, but yes it is a bit over the top on the sidelines sometimes.
