Fran suspended:Just what this team needs!

Woodbury will probably get his next foul at the scorer's table as he checks in.

I believe you are correct, he will have two fouls within the first two minutes.....

Shame because he has been improving very well in that department, also he is shooting free throws as well as anyone on the team with the exception of Aaron.....

Or so it seems to me, without checking the stats.....

Maybe he'll pick up a foul on the opening tip like that one Cy fan was asking for. Or if he hand-checks somebody in the warmups he'll pick up a foul then. So maybe he'll have two fouls before the clock starts.

Just rewatched the 1st half. There were a lot of questionable and ticky tack fouls both ways but a few things really stood ou

The illegal screen on basabe at the beginning of the game. There was some contact but it was weird how lquick it was called and how little it had to do with the play since it was on the other side of the court.

Both fouls on uthoff were really bad. Not sure he even touched his guy on either one of them. The first one was horrible and the 2nd one was an anticipation whistle.

Gave O's illegal screen might be the worst one. He slid out for the screen so late that he didn't even get there in time to make contact. It would have been a foul had he gotten there sooner and I think the ref assumed he was going to and blew the whistle even though Gabe wiffed.

Then there was the charge called on Marble. That shouldn't have been called for 3 reasons. He was still moving, it was ridiculously obvious that he flopped, and I'm almost positive that Marble never even touched him. The guy just ran towards him till he got close then flopped backwards.

Oh yea and there was the goaltending call too. That was all just in the first half.

Tldr.

IF the ref hadn't bumped into and within a second tossed him, which certainly makes it look like a set up, would Fran have chased the refs, what did he have to lose at that point. I do remember Lute Olsen chasing Jim Bain off the court at Purdue. It happens. The refs are not Gods but they certainly act like it. Alsolute power corrupts absolutely.....

The past few years the refs have completely controlled many games and relish their control, how they call a game determines the outcome of too many games. Many have stated this opinion.....
Exactly!

I should have paid closer attention to who started this thread and never opened it....but too late. Do you really think that Marble went on playing the rest of the game without realizing his head coach was not on the sideline? Sure, he might have made a comment downplaying the situation and may have actually not realized it right away that Fran was being ejected (bc it was ridiculous that he was). But there is no way he didn't put two and two together when the head coach was walking to the locker room with 10min to go.

Will the suspension inspire the team a little? Maybe. But this will be old news by next week and have no affect on the rest of the season.

Why the personal insult to start your reply?? I'm trying to start a discussion about how Fran's suspension could spark someone to step up and be a leader. If you don't want to discuss that, feel free to delete your comment and STFU.

Anyway, I'm going by what Dev said. And God help this team if this has "no effect the rest of the season."

Probably want to downplay it as much as possible and hope it goes away from the public mind quickly. I am certain Barta wants to keep it in house......

Speaking of in house, I love the poster/s who say that Fran acts like that at home with Margaret and his children. What a bunch of chumps.....

Jack, just wanted to say I don't think I have ever disagreed with one of your posts. As always, well played sir.

This may be a first. I actually heard the rubes on Twin Cities sports radio defending Fran...and even praising him. They talked about how the ref moved into HIM..on the second "T"...then mentioning how sh***y the officiating has been. Then they went on to talk about how Fran had restored Iowa BBall to respectability after the Lick debacle.

I almost drove off the road.

Do the F**ing Big Ten refs live is some kind of bubble?

While I agree with your post the fact was whether the ref instigated it or not. Fran lost his head/composure and by acting like a mad man and chasing after the official took the bait. Instigated or not the fact was if Fran remains under control there is no second technical.

Do officials instigate and taunt coaches? Absolutely, but its up to the coach to know where the line is and make sure he doesn't cross it. Fran definitely lost track of that and walked right into it. It was a war he never could have won and a battle he shouldn't have waged.

I wouldn't call it taunting, maybe the ref was giving Fran an opportunity to express his difference of opinion as it was probably noticeable down on the court. Fran probably had been needling the refs by that time. You often see refs do this with coaches (usually your Krzyewski's and Izzo's) and all the time in the NBA. Fran let's things build up. As a coach if you can't respect the refs calls knowing they will miss a few then you better have an anger management plan. I'm sure the refs constantly hear you need to call it the same on both ends of the court every night they go out. Did anybody see Izzo after the Ohio State game. Never seen him so mad and they won the game but he looked like he was going to ignite.

As bad as the officiating is it would help if our players made their free throws. Also it was unfortunate that one of our key players threw the ball away on the fast break late in the second half that would have tied the game. Another key player needs to start making more of his free throws late in the game. One of the announcers said that his average has dropped out of 80's into the low 70's? He needs some ice in his veins. Make our free throws and we likely have two less losses.

After the game?? Did you see him at halftime?? Yes, he was going after every referee big-time. Fran got "T'd up" at a halftime recently doing far, far less than what Izzo was doing. His assistants were having less luck restraining Izzo than Fran's were. No "T", then or later. And listening to Bo Ryan the other night (I mean, really listening) - wow! Whoever is pointing this out about these guys seems to have a point.
