Fran suspended:Just what this team needs!

I think the suspension is right and just. In fact, I say it is exactly what this team needs.

When Fran got ejected there should've been a leader on this team to gather the other players together and say, "Coach is gone, but we're gonna be just fine. Stay calm, run your sets, play defense, make your FT's and we're gonna win this game. Now lets go!"

But from what I've read and heard, Dev didn't even realize that FM had been ejected. Somebody has to fill that role. This is the perfect opportunity to do it. I don't know if it will be Marble, or White, or Basabe, or who. But a leader has to emerge or the Hawks will continue to languish in the final moments of games.

I'm convinced that's what the problem is with Iowa right now. Well now is the time to fix it. When Iowa makes their tourney run, this is the turning point that everyone will look back on and say, "that's when the Hawks got it figured out."

Go Hawks!

Right on. Hope you are right. But I've thought the same thing about this team innumerable other times.

Fran's first game back is at Ohio State. We'll see soon enough if this has its desired effect.

One other thing - my first rule on teams like this is that the Seniors need to act like Seniors.

So, as you pointed out, it is on Marble, Basabe and McCabe. But zero field goals from Basabe the other night, and McCabe being little more than a waste of floor space against both Wisconsin and Iowa State does not give me a lot of hope.

I like your suggestion of White, even though he is not yet a Senior. He waited too long the other night (IMHO) to start demanding the rock and doing something with it. And based on his play, I'd call him respectfully deferential, which for now may or may not help. But as you said, we need somebody, and he has showed glimpses that he can be the guy.

I should have paid closer attention to who started this thread and never opened it....but too late. Do you really think that Marble went on playing the rest of the game without realizing his head coach was not on the sideline? Sure, he might have made a comment downplaying the situation and may have actually not realized it right away that Fran was being ejected (bc it was ridiculous that he was). But there is no way he didn't put two and two together when the head coach was walking to the locker room with 10min to go.

Will the suspension inspire the team a little? Maybe. But this will be old news by next week and have no affect on the rest of the season.

I like Arron to fill that role also. I found videos of post game interviews after the Badger game with White,Gessel & Marble on another Hawkeye fan site(Hawkeye report)& I must say the response from White was pretty impressive as he spoke up,said what he felt and you could really tell he was very disapointed about the loss. He said in the interview & I quote "I'am sick of loosing these close games to teams that we are better than" you could see the emotion in his face as he spoke & I believe White is just the rite guy too get this team over the hump and start winning these close games. We soon will see if this is the spark too really get this teams toughness and will too win where it should be. If so we are going to be in for a fun ride! GO HAWKS!

I think Gesell is in a bit of rut right now. I'm not suggesting any kind of change in playing time or anything of that nature. I would like to see Marble and Gesell switch roles the last few minutes of games. Put Dev back at the 1 and Mike at the 2. Marble can then take over offensively...by trying to score himself or set up a teammate. Think NIT last year. Again...I'm talking the last 3 to 5 minutes of the game. Make it possible for Marble and White to lead, take over, control the action, etc.

I want to see Mike try to drive in and get blocked going up for a lay up again, I didn't see enough of that on Sunday.

I'm hoping that White dominating that stretch of game gets his confidence up and it becomes a more common thing. I've never seen him look so unstoppable in the half court before.

There is a possibility that Fran also had another motive for getting the first technical. The second was initiated by the ref. He possibly wanted to get he players attention to pay attention to the game in the second half and continue to play as they did in the first half. There is a definite problem when we start the second half with a lead that seems to vanish......

When he threw the chair at MSU, which I also approved of, he certainly got the teams attention and we beat a very good Michigan team the next game at Carver. The timing works in our favor because we play NW and really should have no problem handling them. Aren't we supposed to have the most experienced assistant coaches and staff in college ball. I know I have read that a few times.....

I respect those who approve of the suspension and fine and those who don't. I do not respect those who call for Fran's head and want him out of here.....

We will be alright and perhaps better because of it.....

He was probably thinking the call would be the same as at the other end of the court and he would get to shoot free throws. Remember there are no more charging calls only blocking, whether or not the shot is cleanly blocked. However the game is being called, driving to the basket with a shot blocking seven foot center standing there is somewhat risky.....

might have meaningful effect.... but part of me doubts it

In my absolute homerism, I do believe it will have a positive effect on the team. The problem might be the fact that Fran has another target on his back.....

While I agree with your post the fact was whether the ref instigated it or not. Fran lost his head/composure and by acting like a mad man and chasing after the official took the bait. Instigated or not the fact was if Fran remains under control there is no second technical.

Do officials instigate and taunt coaches? Absolutely, but its up to the coach to know where the line is and make sure he doesn't cross it. Fran definitely lost track of that and walked right into it. It was a war he never could have won and a battle he shouldn't have waged.

Fran must be on double-secret probation. Barta must have him "grounded". I sent him an email and it came back as undeliverable. I've sent him others and have gotten a response.

Interesting

IF the ref hadn't bumped into and within a second tossed him, which certainly makes it look like a set up, would Fran have chased the refs, what did he have to lose at that point. I do remember Lute Olsen chasing Jim Bain off the court at Purdue. It happens. The refs are not Gods but they certainly act like it. Alsolute power corrupts absolutely.....

The past few years the refs have completely controlled many games and relish their control, how they call a game determines the outcome of too many games. Many have stated this opinion.....

Good point. Look before he even played the rest of the game. Does he usually go an entire media timeout without seeing or hearing from his head coach? No way he could just go back out on the floor after that timeout without the slightest idea that something had changed.

Probably want to downplay it as much as possible and hope it goes away from the public mind quickly. I am certain Barta wants to keep it in house......

Speaking of in house, I love the poster/s who say that Fran acts like that at home with Margaret and his children. What a bunch of chumps.....

I wonder how Wisconsin has finished in the top 4 so many years in a row?
