Fran secretly acquires 4star player.

Now that I've got you here with the title we need to recognize how big of a steal AW is. Coming out of high-school he was an un-ranked low 3star player and 2stars to some. But now I think its clear that fran swooped in an acquired a high 4star player. He is obviously intelligent if BC, and Northwestern wanted him but he was very underrecruited. I want to hear on a scale of 1-10 how big of a steal he was and any other thoughts on AW.

9.....the other guys in this class, Gesell, Meyer, Ingram.......make this what could be the biggest recruiting coup since George Raveling lived in Coralville

4 start might be a bit of a stretch, but he is probably the most promising freshman we have had since Jake Kelly. Ogelsby has struggled a bit lately, but I think he will be a nice get as well. Nice to see that we have a staff capable of evaluating talent, even if they have to recruit under the radar a bit the first couple years.

IIRC he did do some pretty impressive things on the AAU circuit, but he was a late bloomer. guessing he just needed time to fill out and get comfortable with his height. definitely a steal, as the same will be for Gesell (though higher ranked not that many offers).

AW committed early, which stopped interest from other programs. Meyer is in the same boat. From all accounts, the comparisons people outside Iowa were most often making with White were to Gordon Hayward who also was a bit of a late bloomer.

But AW did a bunch of stuff in his last year of HS and AAU that pointed to him having significant success in college.

While people are focusing on Woody and Gesell, understand that there are other guys like Ingram and Meyer that are showing similar signs.

Meyer is going to be effective off the bench at the 4 and 5. After seeing him a couple of times, my gut feeling is that he will be more of a 4.

Think Russ Millard, or Bowen with more height and less bounce.

He really wanted the Clemson offer, and from what I got from a couple of guys down here Clemson had him as a target, but they were holding off extending an offer until after seeing a bit more over the summer. Score by Fran.

will be interesting to see how the 2012 class looks after their senior year. do the recruiting sites "readjust" the rankings in the spring? in that case (not that it matters) we might end up with that much better of a ranking.

great find- long, athletic, and can shoot cold-blooded 3's as a frosh! Iowa's creates match-up problems now, if they start canning 3's, look out!

I've reads these boards for quite some time, but never created an account until recently. I just want to say I am very excited about yesterday's win over Wisconsin, and the direction the program is heading. We have a lot of promising young talent on the squad already, and have several more key pieces arriving next season. I read a stat that Wisconsin is something like 59-1 under Bo Ryan against unranked teams at home. Congrats to the Hawks on making that a 2! We will likely still have a couple of games where people get frustrated by the team's performance, but people just need to remember that this program was in complete disarray when Fran arrived, and it takes time to restore the program to where we want it. There are clear signs that the program is improving, and I'm proud to say I'm a Hawkeye basketball fan (as well as a fan of all Hawkeye sports). Go Hawks!

don't forget Clemmons, rated #1 pg in Michigan and #4 best player in the state by Michigan in state ranking people
Ray Lee is rated at 27th pg & #142 nationally by rivals and is rated 17th best pg with a score of 91 by ESPN, 19th best pg [17th best is a 4 *] on scout
but in the eyes of the Michigan people Lee is the 17th best player in the state
and i recall how people were really excited by him until his off court troubles
i guess i am saying Fran found anouther recruit the main ranking service either overlooked or ignored because of his committment to Iowa
on Sout he is a 2* nr
on Rival a 3* nr
ESPN 2* 57th rated pg, score of 85, lowest score of all incoming recruits

great to have you on board rick! ;)

definitely has that feel to him, doesn't he. seems like the kind of scrapper we need down low. McCabe kind of fills that role, but he's just not big enough.
I like the Ryan Bowen comparison, but I think AW is way more athletic, thus he will bring more than Bowen did. But he's a scrapper like Ryan was.

fran getting aaron was huge. i think he was helped in recruiting him by a friend of aaron's who also came to iowa and played bball with aaron in hs. from what ive heard ray hamilton (frosh te) was a secondary recruiter. either way he is a great get.

yes, IIRC Hamilton did play a big part. they are friends and played b-ball together.

a shorter Bullard was my thinking
Bullard 6'10
Meyer 6'8

i am excited to see how fran does with players that are recognized as good by the services
considering how the little ranked players like Marble, Basabe and White are doing
White is 4th on the team in scoring at 9 ppg
Basabe is 3rd at 9.8 ppg
Marble is 2nd at 11.4 ppg
pretty solid nucleus for next year to add a center and a pg too

That is an outstanding comment and 100 percent accurate.
Don't forget about Clemmons. Here is a quote from Mlive of Michigan HS athletics.

"He has gone from a tough, athletic all around guard to a senior who can consistantly lead the scoring column for the states best team, against the states stiffest competition, in addition to his prior duties. Clemmons had 25 points in a win at Kalamazoo Central and 19 in a nuetral court win against Romulus. He can create his own shot, hit from outside (3 three pointers against Romulus) and is his best as a scorer going to the hole with his athleticism, toughness and finishing ability."

Sexton HS is the number one ranked team in Michigan and Anthony plays with Denzel Valentine, the coaches son, who is committed to Michigan State.
