FRAN: RELAX

Smile a little bit. Relax. Quit yelling at players. If this team will just loosen up a little, they could make a run. The talent is there!!

He was really ****** at Uhl early on. Uhl deserved it though. That kid has a whiny attitude.

I disagree. Fran doesn't yell anymore than most coaches on the sidelines. By all accounts players love him and his coaching style. If they can't take the yelling, maybe they should forgo their scholarship and join the chess club? I mean he's no Bobby Knight out there. So he kicked a chair several years ago. He's been fairly subdued the last few years. You ever see Tom Izzo yell at a player. He has chewed Costello's *** numerous times and called him out during a halftime interview. Newsflash, coaches yell.

Fran was very short with Dolphin at the beginning of the post game interview. Fran seemed upset that Dolph said the offense seemed sloppy and off in the first half and Fran repeatedly told Dolph no the offense was fine and good. dolph finally got the message and changed subjects to JU's game.

Maybe Fran was tired of the losing streak for sure and maybe he didnt want negative talk after a big win which is ok to ask for but lighten up some.

I don't think we can complain about coaches yelling and being upset. After all, we fire their ***** when they don't win enough to suit us.

The one person I don't see him yelling at is Jok and he's been pure awful with the exception of a 3 every now and again.

Agreed. This is big boy, D-1 basketball, if you can't take the scrutiny/pressure maybe you are better off playing at a lower level.

Fran has commented before about which players respond to a good chewing out and which ones are not built that way. I am sure he knows exactly how to handle individual players when they are not performing.

Not to single out seepig but his post illustrates the point I'm going to make.

I read an interview with Fran a while back where he was asked about his emotional coaching style. His answer was that every kid needs to be coached differently. He specifically talked about Uthoff. He said Uthoff hates to be yelled at. Uthoff came to him early and asked him to please not yell at him... just tell him what he wants done differently and he'll do it. He didn't mention other names but said that some players need to be yelled at or they don't take the point he's making seriously.

I'm confident that Fran knows exactly what he's doing and who he's doing it with.

Fran is a yeller but his team isn't. Huge difference & a totally different approach to coaching ....Fran is catching on. Look at his bench players also. There's not one kid on the Iowa team that's gets crazy & real emotional. I.e. yelling at their teammates....Fran is able to get his point across...he only yells are the refs (and damn it, they need yelling at)....

I played all sorts of sports in high school.

Lettered 3x in football.

Yelling was the norm. I had my facemask grabbed a few times.

Hell, if the coach wasn't yelling at/about you, you were probably sitting on the bench.

My coaches in HS would be screaming his heart out . I'll be grinding from ear to ear . He realized that I don't wear hearing aid while playing sports, thus my goofy smiles.

Does anybody have quotes from their dialogue or was it more of Fran's tone rather than what was said? Just curious as to how 'heated' it got and/or if Dolph made Fran answer some tough questions. Podalak is a great listen for football for that reason, holds the players and coaches responsible and doesn't feel the need to sugar coat everything.

For me, the coaches who didn't yell I didn't take seriously and the team tended to walk all over them, screw around in practice, etc.

I got yelled and chewed out in little league baseball when I was like 10-11 yrs old. I understand that guys will tune out after awhile but for crying out loud some of it just goes with the territory and if your playing bad and messing up out there (Like Uhl was and Jok at times) then they should expect it and know it's coming too. What do you expect? This isn't where everyone gets a trophy and ice cream after every game. This is D1 big boy hoops. Not everyone (almost everyone) goes to the Big dance by which teams should be judged. It's pretty cut throat between recruiting and the games down to every call a ref makes. Now that it's March madness time lets hope these guys can toughen up mentally and play some good ball. There's no reason they can't. As far as Fran being short with Dolph I'd just have to have heard it to know more I suppose. Dolph is a pretty big homer so I'm surprised after a win of all things that something like that'd happen..
