Fran McCaffery on AM 1700 Today

Not sure how many were able to listen to Fran today with Andy Garman and Larry Cotlar. I was glad to hear Fran say Cartwright and Gatens were going to play on a team that's going overseas this summer. Also Melsahn is invited to try to make the 19 and under national team. Competition like this during the summer will only make them better players. Does anyone have information on what team Bryce and Matt are going to be a part of.

Does the 19 and under team practice against Team USA or is that something else I'm thinking of?

Did he make any mention of what he plans to do with the last scholarship? Is he still looking to fill it if he can sign the right guy, or does he plan to bank it? I really, really hope we can fill that spot with a good Juco player.

No that's usually the USA junior national team. And there's not a major international competition this year so I doubt they will be practicing against them this summer.

I tuned in after he was just finishing discussing Hubbard. Once they were done with that they moved on to a different topic. I didn't hear him say anything about the last scholarship.

The opportunities for Melsahn, Matt and Bryce this summer sound exciting.
I wonder if they're going to try to do the PTL as well.

Beyond that I was struck by Fran's take on the Payne situation. Coach liked him, appreciated his talent, but Cully wanted to be the man immediately on his return was the jist. Fran obviously wasn't surprised about the departure and accordingly looked for a JC PG. I didn't hear that coach sought a PG before he suspected about Cully. Cully would have been a soph when Bryce is a senior. He could have been a junior with a frosh behind him. Are PGs really prima donnas that much? He couldn't wait a year to compete with a freshman for the starting spot?

Right after the end of the year Fran made some comments that led me to say:
"Translation: Cully is NOT my PG." So, I have a feeling this is more of a 2 way street.

In regards to the Cully situation, that is what you call coach speech and nothing more. He was not very troubled when Cully said he was going to transfer.

My boss is pals with a guy who's plugged into the recruiting scene. His two comments when Fran was hired. 1) McCaffery is a GREAT coach, Hawkeye fans will love him. 2) Cully Payne will never play for him.

I tend to agree with my bosses friend.

I would still feel better if Cully was still on the roster.

I agree Smarty. It'd be nice to have the depth. That said, this team would have never reached middle of the pack Big Ten with Cully at the helm. When Bryce Cartwright committed, I emailed a co-worker of mine, introducing him to the next Hawkeye starting pg. I don't have a crystal ball but it wasn't hard to see Cully is not a high D1 talent.

Cully is a good D1 talent, just not likely for Fran's tempo. I can See Cully doing very well at any school that runs a lot of zone Defense and is looking for a solid game manager.

I think that Fran probably felt that he had a better option/options on the bench for what he is trying to accomplish. Hopefully it works best for both parties.

Didn't Payne start 5 games before he had to get shut down because of the sports hernia, or was it all a lie?

Did you not see how bad Cartwright was at the beginning of last season? Cully was also the returning pg who started every game the season before, why would he not start at the beginning of the season?

I don't think that's the point. The statement was Cully will never play for him, but, in fact, Cully did.

Don't disagree with you, he was a turnover waiting to happen, he had to get the JUCO out of him before he was able to become a player. Once Bryce became comfortable, he went from a give your starter a rest player to an All-Big Ten type performer...I think if Bryce would have played remotely close to where did in the Big Ten in the nonconference, he would have been second team, at the very least third team.

Thank you:D

Do you think he would have played very much next season? And do you think those minutes would have been enough to feed his ego? (which is quite large)
