I think perhaps the biggest difference between Kirk and Fran is that Kirk views the Media as "the enemy" or "against him" and the media is just an annoyance to his day.
Fran see the media as a marketing tool for his program. He realizes the media, with the help of twitter/facebook/etc. is an easy way to promote the team and the players in a positive way. He has figured out how to use the media to his advantage.

I love Fran's interviews...they are so informative and positive. He is trying to get the Iowa bb program off the mat. When I hear fans rip on KF now, I remember how he inherited a similar program on the mat....and he quietly went about winning two Big Ten Titles....now, he gets hammered constantly. Will Fran win two Big Ten titles? I hope so, but until he does, I think maybe we should cut KF some slack. It is easier to win at bb because there is more bb talent in Iowa than fb talent, and you need fewer players to create a good team. Yet, our fans are so stuck in their anti- KF mode right now, even a positive thread on the opening media session for Fran and his guys devolves into criticism of KF....and Jon plays right into it...again,Jon you are setting a tone for your site, and it has become almost a cesspool of anti- KF sentiment at this point...at 4-2, he is a pariah here...I like Fran, but he has yet to even make an NCAA tourney, which is like KF making a bowl...oh he has made like ten bowls in the last 12 seasons...right? If Fran makes the NCAA tourney 10 of the next 12, and wins in those tournys...he will match KF.
Half of the teams make a bowl game every year. There are only 30some teams that make the tourney. They are far from "like each other".
I think people were mainly discussing the difference in media transcripts/interviews. Simply saying Fran's are readable and worth a listen, Kirk's say nothing and are pointless...which is how he wants it. I would say the same about Belichek's pressers and no one is saying he's a bad coach. My comments were strictly based on the wide gap between the two in use of media, not records or coaching ability.

I loved his comments about Peter Jok. He made sure to mention that while he's going to be hard on him, he understands that they're doing it because he has the chance to be a special player. For all the talk about Fran's tirades, you watch him coach, he's giving encouragement too. It's easy to see why these guys will play hard for him.

I have no problem with him blowing smoke up his players' behinds, especially if it motivates them to perform better. Heck, we all need a little strategic smoke some times.

on a serious note, Fran definitely know what buttons to push to get the fans and media going. he has a crap load of goodwill built up, but now he needs to deliver. he sure is still in Josh's corner, will be interesting to see how it plays out this season.
i'm very curious to see who has made the biggest strides this offseason. specifically, will White be able to take that next step and be a star?
