Fran knows no D

Basically every high level stat measurement says that hedging hard with your big men is the best possible defense to play, but it's absolutely exhausting and most teams don't have the depth to do it. Now that was in the NBA, not college, maybe things work a bit differently at this level.

You can have your misgivings about advanced stats when it comes to basketball but to call it strategically unsound is absolutely false.

Strategically unsound for the IOWA HAWKEYES because of the limited ability of the 5 to recover and still prevent the drive without fouling or poking someone's eyes out.

The next couple of seasons will be telling about whether or not Fran and his staff can coach defense. The potential is there. Nunge's ceiling is through the roof. He moves as well as any 7-footer I've ever seen, and Garza and Kriener will add strength.

Preventing dribble-drive is another matter. Frankly, that boils down to athleticism and attitude, and we just don't have the right players on the perimeter. If Fran can reel in Tyrell Terry or DJ Carton, that would help (not looking good for either at this point, though). Otherwise, expect more of the same on the perimeter.

Without that speed on the perimeter, it is a recipe for a 7 footer playing tight D to FOUL.
