Fran called the team "a little fragile" in the postgame

So Iowa loses 5-6, including being favored at home, when win puts them in pretty good contention for #4 seed and they play worst game of year by letting a team throw in yet another last second shot to beat you.

I'm surprised that Fran never takes any responsibility for coaching these losses.

"the players are fragile". What exactly is that suppose to mean?
Handle with care. Coaches rarely take responsibility for losses.

But to more important matters, kc.

1. Has Iowa's luck factor dropped to 354 finally so they can start getting some actual good luck?

2. Fran saying this before the BTT doesn't help the situation.

3. Telling them to flush it and have fun.

4. If White isn't going to show up then at least yanking him for bone-headed back-to-back plays (a couple of times) would be a good thing like Fran does with Basabe, Jok, Uthoff, Clemmons.

5. Why is it Jok can feed the big fellas in his seven minutes of the last conference game but none of the starters seem to be able to do so with that ratio for the entire season?

6. Woody gets #3. That's +3 than the Woody-haters combined in their entire Iowa BB careers. No "shhuuuuush" needed.

7. Why is it Iowa's opponents' best 3-pt shooters can get wide-open looks but Iowa's 3-pt shooters have the opponents' defenders on them like whitey-tighties?

8. How can Basabe only get 14 mins while shooting 3/4 FG? That's the same number of made FG as White (in 22 less minutes)?
On SENIOR NIGHT.

9. Does the "2nd foul in first half and you're out" philosophy lead to timidity on defense? Does that rule need an amendment when playing zone defense?

10. Expectations are gone. Screw everybody else: opponents, fans, talking heads.
Just go play ball.

Iowa plays stupid. The things they continue to do on the floor is incredible. Gesell up in that kids grill in that situation is the icing on the cake of this team's stupidity.

Fran needs to chill the f out, cause the screaming act ain't working.

It is called tight defense in a tied game with the clock running down.....

That is really all there is to it.....

Lot of basketball left to play and I still believe in this team. They need to start having fun again. Perhaps now that the pressure is off, falling out of the top 25 and the media praise back on Earth, we can relax and play up to our ability, like the team that won at Ohio State and beat the number one team in the Big by 20 points giving them one of their three losses.....

Why would he ask about a phantom foul that never occurred. Wonder if he asked the refs about the 10 second no call that should have given the ball to Iowa quite close to the end of the game.....

It did appear to me, and others on here, most notably Jon, that Gesell was trying to foul. I would think at least one reporter would ask if that is what occurred? Kind of a big play right? We at least know we don't get beat on a buzzer beater unless that occurs. So the elephant in the room is WHY did it?

It was stupid. He was 40 feet from the basket

Yeah I love pressure D...but in that situation...no reason to be that tight...at worst Iowa was going to get ball back with around 5 seconds left...(unless they gave up offensive rebound, and in that case...you don't deserve to win)

I kinda thought that, too. It looked like he was doing one of those unintentional intentional fouls, but then I thought, why did it when the game is tied . . . unless you think your defense is that bad?

I think he was trying to get a five second and then harass the ball driver from getting into offensive play as much as possible. That call is not made if the jersey said MSU on it for reasons discussed in other threads. The foul that was called is ticky-tacky even back in November when refs were calling arm bars and hands-to-hip fouls which Gesell did neither one of those.

But it doesn't matter if Iowa plays bad defense or great defense (they did both in this game), the opposing team is going to throw in a basket as the shot clock and/or game clock hits one second.

Agree.

This team has proven to be capable of playing with anyone in the country.

I don't think the slide at the end of the season is monumental from a mechanics or x's and o's. They've just been a 1/2 step off for the last 5 games. I think that's more of a want-to than a can't.

A want-to can be the easiest thing to correct. Or it can be the hardest thing to correct. You believe in this team; I do, too. I don't know if they believe in this team; if not, then the want-to will be the second sentence of this paragraph.
