Hell I'd settle for beating Purdue every year and Wisconsin every other.Supposedly ISU has had some good teams during that time. If you believe them anyway. Including the 'best one they've ever had'.
Be it those programs are all down or not and MN hasn't been all that down they've had some 9 win seasons in there it's been an impressive run for us. If we were to add Purdue and Wisconsin to that we'd be a top 10 team every yr just about.
Hush...Hell I'd settle for beating Purdue every year and Wisconsin every other.
This doesn't mean squat because all of these teams are garbage, but since 2015 we are 28-0 against ISU, nebraska, Illinois, and Minnesota.
That's a pretty decent streak because you'd think out of 28 games one of those blind squirrels would find a nut at least once.
Very reasonable take. I concur. This is literally why I try to take a deep breath regularly when I get grouchy about the Hawks. Or Kirk. Or whatever. Are we a national title contender? Not really.
But, as recently as what...10-11 months ago, Iowa was ranked #3 and beat the #4 team. (Yes, polls are polls).
Sure was exhilarating. 8/9 months ago, Iowa had a crack at the Big 10 Title.
All I have to do is imagine being a Nebraska/ISU/Illinois/Minnesota fan. I mean, if we're occasionally the bridesmaid, the BEST those fans can hope for is being the guestbook attendant or an usher. And that's a best case scenario. Usually, they're just guests.
I'll take it.
This is just our conference and one of our close rivals we play every year. Just think about all the other mediocre or less than teams in all the other conferences. Missouri's, Arkansas, pretty much all the ACC except Clemson, etc. etc. This is literally why I try to take a deep breath regularly when I get grouchy about the Hawks. Or Kirk. Or whatever. Nicely stated. When I have more time I'm going to bump off your 2nd paragraph with some thoughts.I live in The Lou.
Surrounded by Mizzou fans.
Being a Mizzou fan would be miserable. Not only is the team just not any good, they have no character. Even if the Hawks are marginal in a given year, the traditions of The Swarm, pink locker room, the longevity of Fry/Ferentz, and now The Wave are important. Students and a large swathe of the state embrace Hawkeye football. Sure, you'll see Tiger tails on a few cars each year. And a few flags and t-shirts. But nothing close to the number of Tigerhawks you'll see on ads, flags, stickers, license plates, t-shirts all across Iowa. Even with a second 'popular' university the Hawks have to compete with. People try to argue it's because there's no pro team. Gimmee a break. Texas has two pro teams. And it in no way diminishes support for or interest in college (or high school, for that matter) football. STL's relationship with pro football is, well, what it is. The Chiefs? Yeah, I guess. If you're from KC.
Mizzou is always like trying to generate interest and manufacture character by radically changing their uniforms and whatnot. Worse than even ISU does. The Mizzou cheerleaders and marching band don't perform at the Farmer's Market. Nobody goes to the Missouri state fair and has their picture taken with whatever the mascot is called. Truman? I think? The team is more important to older alumni than the students. A blackout or 'stripes' in the stands just isn't possible and is meekly pulled off.
I graduated from Iowa back in the early 90s. If you went to Iowa for 4 years between 1978 and 1996....you were gonna see a Rose Bowl while you were there. Or you missed one by just a year. Then came the BCS. While your BCS appearances were a little further apart, you were still looking at one every so often. And for a stretch there of like 4 years, Iowa played bowl games against the 'reigning' National Champ or the team that would win it the following year (LSU/Florida/USC).
I'm passionate about Iowa. I'm proud(?) about how often the Hawkeyes are considered just a step below the elite of elite. And that nobody doubts the technical possibility (while not likely) that something *could* happen in a given year and they would be a party crasher to the elite of elite. Nobody thinks that about the teams FryIowa noted. Nobody thinks that about Mizzou. Even when they stumble across a good QB. Especially now.
It's why I've never been a fan of this march to the binary importance of the national championship. I think it will ultimately diminish the importance and accompanying joy of being a Hawk. I don't wanna feel like Mizzou fans do. Or should I say, I don't wanna feel like Mizzou fans should. Cause most of them are pretty delusional.
I've been going to live hawkeye games since the 70s, when I was a small child. Great memories going to games with my dad, who passed way years ago. He would be astonished with this record. It's truly amazing given our history. I know we all want championships, but this is amazing. This doesn't mean squat because all of these teams are garbage, but since 2015 we are 28-0 against ISU, nebraska, Illinois, and Minnesota.

That Nebby game wasn't as close as the score.I've been going to live hawkeye games since the 70s, when I was a small child. Great memories going to games with my dad, who passed way years ago. I remember a game I went to as a young grade school kid when Iowa knocked off Nebby early in the Fry years. It was SO memorable. Beating Nebraska is expected now. I remember some amazing Illinois games, and some big wins and losses.
Now I'd be happy with some parity with Bucky and Purdon't Pete.
Yeah the younger lads have a tough time contextualizing how back then beating Nebraska was really something. When Fry first beat them it was like if say Vanderbilt beat Bama now. It's just that unlikely of a thing. And now in our lifetimes where Iowa and Nebraska are has flipped so drastically it's only comprehendible if you've been paying attention.I've been going to live hawkeye games since the 70s, when I was a small child. Best analogy ever! She was hot once, but now she fake bakes, bleaches her hair, wears too much makeup, and hangs out at the bar and acts special, talking about going to that Motley Crue concert that one time. Meanwhile, her teen daughter Brandine is having a party at her house.I remember when Iowa had that two game set against Nebbie when KF first took over. Nebbie was at its height of glory and Iowa was really bad. These was no hope going into those games and Nebbie just drubbed us. Living amongst these people was unbearable back then. It is still unbearable now, but for different reasons. Then they were insufferable narcissist. Like the hot girl at the bar who thinks she is too good for you. Now they are delusional. Like the too old woman at the bar who still thinks she is the hot girl at the bar.
You forgot about the turpentine perfume and Newport menthols.Best analogy ever! Good point. I think I actually worked with this woman once, in a rural Wisky. You forgot about the turpentine perfume and Newport menthols.
