Me too. He should be on the short list of candidates when KF leaves. He's a good recruiter and he runs a style of offense that works. Wisconsin was always towards the top in scoring and rushing under Bielema.
Ok if you want to talk about the scores since Kirk arrived in 1999 Iowa has still out scored NW 333-251 that averages 28-21 so a touchdown ahead per game. No loss has been by more than 2 touchdowns, and 4 have been by 5 points or less. Iowa still has the advantage.
You're free to think that all you want, doesn't change the fact you're wrong.
This thread is based on an untrue premise. Intact Iowa is pretty dominant in the series. Iowa wins 64% of the time (47-24-3). Iowa wins by an average of 11 points (25-14). Iowa also has won 14 bowl wins since 1949 to NW's 1. So this thread should be about how much better the Iowa program is than the NW program.
What? I sat in the second row of that game and we looked like a High school JV team. Our offense was embarrassing. At one point some parents of the Iowa players started jawing at each other and it got weird...a lot of the Iowa crowd left at half.
Our base defense only works against today's efficient spread offenses when we have a guy like Chad Greenway or AJ Edds (as an upperclassman) on the slot guy and a couple of stud d-linemen who can limit the time the QB has in the pocket. If we consistently had guys on par with Roth, Clayborn, Ballard and Babs cycling through on d-line and Edds (as an upperclassman) and Greenway cycling through as LBs, the base defense would be just fine. But we don't.
So Iowa needs a pro-prospect or two on defense to be effective..... But doesn't Iowa have a hard time getting the recruits? Most Iowa fans, not you OKeef, think that's reasonable....Our base defense only works against today's efficient spread offenses when we have a guy like Chad Greenway or AJ Edds (as an upperclassman) on the slot guy and a couple of stud d-linemen who can limit the time the QB has in the pocket. Spitting into the wind, my man. I understand that anyone can manipulate numbers to fit an argument, but NW has pretty much owned Iowa lately. That may change this year if the offense can get their **** together, but for right now Fitz has Iowa's number.
Actually for everyone blasting me about last year's game look back at the box score-
It was only 14-3 at half time. We had one fumble at the Northwestern 28 and had a drive stall at the Northwestern 33 because of a delay of game. That's when Northwestern drove down and scored their 2nd TD to go up 14-3. We then answered by driving down to the Northwestern 23 right before half but Vandy got sacked and then completely under threw the receiver on 4th down. That is why the parents were probably jawing at each other because that last series was awful. Mark Weisman also got hurt in the 2nd and didn't play the rest of the game.
We opened up the 2nd half with a blocked punt which is why I said if you take out the block punt the game was a lot closer than people give us credit for. They did jump to a 28-3 lead in the third but we got it to 28-17 and then drove down to the Northwestern 24 with 1:44 left. Most Hawkeye fans probably left the stadium and missed this part of the game. Unfortunately we couldn't convert the 4th and 2. I believe we converted the play before but one of our backup OL got called for a penalty. I remember Brian Ferentz just going nuts on the official.
Obviously the Defense didn't play well and our Offense was pathetic, but at the end of the day we lost by 11 points to the best team ever at Northwestern. I think we can all agree that last year's Hawkeye Team was pretty bad but we have to remember that a lot of factors play into it (injuries/changing coordinators/transfers/etc).
I don't think we lost the game because of the game plan. I think we lost the game because we didn't execute the game plan! That happens when you are playing a lot of inexperienced players. Hopefully that changes this year and we give Northwestern a nice #### burger!!!!
Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Northwestern Wildcats - Recap - October 27, 2012 - ESPN
Talk about a knock-down drag-out thread. Awesome!!!! Will anything change??
About what, exactly?
At this point in time I can't remember. Something foolish I imagine. Doesn't really matter anymore.
I hate seeing that video. Bieiema knew Ferentz well enough to know he would never expect a fake punt, mostly because a fake anything would never cross Ferentz's mind. Play it safe, don't expect surprises, chomp chomp chomp. That's Kirk's game plan.
Another thought. With Wisconsin at their own 25 yard line why not go for a block and seal the deal if they happened to block it? Then there's almost no chance of them succeeding if they were to run the fake.
Not that it doesn't fall on the head coach but the players are taught not to turn and run until the ball is kicked. As you can clearly see they all turned and ran before the punter that I'm guessing runs like OK4P took off.
