what they were expecting. Did they expect to hire a current head coach at a winning school from a power conference? Why are those coaches going to leave that job for Nebraska? And don't say because of facilities.
Bo Ryan had a history of Division II success and then two years at UW-Milwaukee before going to UW-Madison. Izzo was an assistant only before taking over for Heathcote. There are good coaches everywhere, the key is finding the right guy for the job. Very few schools can pluck coaches from winning programs in power conferences. Iowa isn't a school that can, and Nebraska certainly isn't.
Exactly!
Actually, Bo was a Division III coach at Plateville for over a decade with two years at the Division I powerhouse UW-Milwaukee where he had a losing record in the Horizon League. Yet, Bo Ryan has never finished lower than fourth in the conference & has won over seventy percent of his games in the Big Ten.
About the only criticism against Ryan is that the Badgers have never made the Final Four. Yet, again, it is thirty-two years & counting since Iowa last made the Final Four. Further, he has won three Big Ten titles. In contrast, in the twenty-nine seasons since Lute left, the Hawks have seriously challenged for the Big Ten title only twice.
It is hard to fathom, but Iowa only has played past the first weekend of the NCAA tournament three times in the last twenty-nine seasons.
I think what dismays the Nebraska fans the most is this coaching change could be seen coming down the tracks for months. By Mid January the local radio talking heads were predicting Sadler to be gone at season's end. By the first of February, the debate was not IF he would be fired, but would it happen mid season.
So, naturally, with the fans and everyone outside the program talking about it, it was assumed, the administration was on the same train, and was out looking for a new coach.
Obviously, that did not happen, as Nebraska seemed to be a rudderless boat searching for a new coach. I mean ... Ben Howland??? Really? But, I guess it doesn't hurt to ask.
Remember Stormin's initial reaction to McCaffery was fire Barta. Sorry, Stormin' but I had to bring that up.
My crow eating came when I insisted that Lick was going to get another year and that he should get that year...The dessert was, holy crap, I was glad he was gone after it went down...
Everytime someone bumps a thread from the lick/Fran transition I get nervous. I know I was ready for lick to go. However, I don't remember my initial thoughts on Fran.
I almost had a heart attack...
Thanks brah![]()
