Forbes - Iowa can afford to.....

Don't think the guy understands Iowa. Donations would see a drop if KF was fired. The Big money love KF

The fact anyone would argue for keeping a coach they don't believe in because of the cost is crazy. Iowa has plenty of money, if its time to move on you do it, it will cost you far more in the long run not to.

barta has a lot of competing priorities in the AD. There are a lot of budgetary concerns.. He may think that he needs the cash for other obligations - some strategic - debt service etc.

and he may not have lost faith like all of us sitting at our computers.

When they fired Lick they had to go to the tkt holders and ask for money early. Buying KF out would be no easy trick. Don't kid yourself. He is a long way from going anywhere. People need to vent and then get ready for Pitt. Last Sat was painful. But there are 9 games left. lets see what happins

It's pretty amazing that Forbes is now piling on, too

This snippet is amazing:

“…especially considering the fact that Iowa has quietly built one of the wealthiest athletic departments in the country.
According to data reported to the Department of Education last year, Iowa ranks No. 11 in athletic revenue among all college programs. What’s more, its $30 million in profits are second only to Alabama ($34 million), topping even Texas ($27 million) and Notre Dame ($20 million). Those earnings are a bit of an anomaly for Iowa, but it also reported profits over $14 million in two of the previous three years. Even if things fall back to that level, the school’s athletic department would be looking at giving up around 25% of its annual earnings to afford the cost of firing Ferentz.

In other words, it would sting, especially in that first year, but Iowa appears able to afford firing Ferentz if it’s finally ready to start rebuilding its program. And considering that Iowa football has experienced consistent revenue growth (up about 10% annually over the last five years), has an increasingly valuable conference home and is currently among some struggling competition, there may not be a better time for a fresh start."

Wow

It depends on what you want a continued mediocre offensive team with little excitement and lowered attendance but with KF who is honest, not cheating probably, and not quotable. And attendance is becoming a drop in the bucket compared to TV revenue.

Or do you want to fire KF and go after a pizzazy new coach that might fail but brings exciting offense, butts in the seats, and maybe more wins once in a while.

KF did a great job rebuilding and maintaining thru 2005, they swooned in 06-07. 08-10 was great to good, then as people have said we should be on the third trip up the rollercoaster hills. This is a very telling year or two. a huge collapase this year and next to me would signal a head coach who has lost it and cant right the ship.

I have always backed KF while pointing out some disturbing KF problems that I see, but this is the telling time where he wins and he stays or he is fired or resigns. And no Brian Ferentz unless he goes off to get head coaching experience first

Wow

I'd say you've jumped ship, as well.

I think a lot of folks will be surprised what will happen if KF is fired before season's end. The ONLY thing that would save that would be a HUGE hire. Good luck with that.

Guys KF isn't getting fired. This year is important and GD might have to go. IDK But all this is just working off frustration of a terrible second half and a loss to ISU. I am surprised Jon hasn't come back to earth by now. Its Tue already. Just kidding Jon. Everyone is frustrated

The article sets a realistic landscape. The key is finding the right guy...one that will have enough personality to maintain interest, is good (it only takes 7-5 with an occasional 9 or even 10 win year...not that tough...you beat the 4 non-con cupcakes and go 5-3 in the Big Ten <Illinois, Purdue and NWestern should be gimmies>) and likes what IOWA has to offer.

And make no mistake...the IOWA job is a good one. yeah...small state, tough recruiting, we hear that all the time. But also name recognition, great facilities, 30+ years of winning tradition, a financially robust athletic department, a great fan base and Iowa City offers great quality of life to the family.

The only way it happens, is if Kirk starts getting tired and decides to hang it up. If so, we can only hope that he exits with the same class he's exhibited in his career...and does so in way that helps IOWA land the best possible coach they can.

By the way...if Norm Parker was the #1 secret to KFz's success... Chris Doyle has to be #1A. Let's hope he stays no matter what.

1. I don't know if that's necessarily true these days.

2. If I'm understanding the article correctly, even if our profits dropped back to the $14 million range (down from the $30 million it's at right now), we could STILL afford it. Maybe some of the big money loves Ferentz, but enough to create more than a $16 million drop in profits overnight? I highly doubt that.

3. Depending on who was hired, donations may very well hold steady or even increase.

There is no way Iowa hires Brian if we get rid of Kirk. The only way Brian takes over the reigns is if Kirk leaves on his own accord when he is ready to retire (good terms). While I don't think things are ever as good or as bad as they seem, KF better right the ship soon or he is going to have major problems with job security.

3308 I think the point is it wont happen unless the Big Money turns on him. Im sure it would depend on who was hired. But those guys are hard to come by

Why would they fire him before season's end?
