For the Naysayers

This thread may make sense if that last year on this W graph went up. However it doesnt right now the graph is going down so this thread is pointless right now.

It shows Kirks tenure has been cyclical. Last year was a couple plays away from being 6-6 or 7-5 (not much difference from for 2007 season).

My point was that many of our fellow hawkeye fans need to take a step back and look at the big picture. Too many fair weather fans out there. People need some perspective. Last year was a team with 2 new coordinators, extremely young across the board (especially on special teams), and a team that was bitten by the injury bug. There are a lot of similarities between this team and the 08 team. Lets sit back and see how they do before we condemn them horrible and fire our coaches.

6 days until we are 1-0

I agree that it's time to muster some support and optimism for this year's team at this point. However let's not use the old excuse of how close we were in our losses last year to help rationalize the team's performance or that of the staff.

As Mike Hlas well stated recently......

"There are those who would note Iowa had five losses by a total of 16 points. Statistically, that is true. But four of those games were against teams that also finished with losing records. When you’re coin-flipping with mediocre teams, you’re mediocre. "

He was probably being kind by using the word "mediocre".

Agreed. By no means do I think Iowa had a good team last year, but that was due to a number of reasons- injury, lack of depth and new coordinators being the obvious. The lack of depth was due to the crazy amount of players we lost from the '07 and '08 classes. Many of the backups, and special teams players were young guys. Sounds very similar to the situation the bball found itself a couple years back.

Hlas nailed it by saying "when you're coin-flipping with mediocre teams, you're mediocre." But if I recall, our Orange Bowl winning team was coin-flipping about every week. We just happened to have veteran guys who understood the system and could just go out and play football.

True...the Orange Bowl team did do some coin flipping, but that was mostly due to Stanzi's Dr. Jekyl / Mr. Hyde season. He kept many teams in the games with bonehead plays. Other than Indiana in the first half, the one thing that team could do with anyone in the country that year, was play defense. The best Iowa defense I've seen in my opinion.

I couldn't agree more it's like a business... to save money its always about doing more with less, well eventually you will get less with less. Injuries + transfers + youth = 4-8 season

They were exactly two plays away from being 2-10 last year, genius. This is exactly what Iowa does under KF. They play a lot of really close games, most of which they lose. You miss the point entirely by bringing up how close they were to this or that. They were 2 plays away from winning 2 more games, and 2 plays away from losing 2 more games. They ended up EXACTLY where they should have been.

I don't see a pattern

I do see a team that has 3 wins on the schedule, and that's about it

+1 on teh defense, right up there with teh 2004 unit.

As for many of those close games in 2009, I think it's over done argument. NIowa...lucky. Michigan and Arkansas state were playing chase all game.... late scores gave them a hope and prayer, but not nessesarily a chance. MSU, pure guts by Iowa on the road.
