I understand the BTN's perspective, but from the fan's perspective we see less Iowa basketball than we used to before the BTN. I used to be a Mediacom subscriber and they used to carry most of the non-conference schedule on local channels (within Iowa). When the BTN came out I jumped to Dish thinking that every game would be televised because they have 6 BTN channels. I feel we have been screwed over and it hurts Iowa basketball because people can't watch these games. They are playing exciting b-ball even if it is against bad competition; it's still exciting to watch them score pts. The BTN is hurting Fran's momentum in rebuilding the program and getting fans interested again.I am die hard and it pisses me off to know end.

Purely from a fans perspective, I would rather see Iowa receive 20 million from the BTN, instead of 22 and broadcast every game.

the "young fans" spend all day on their ipad, PC, playstation, or phone. do you know how "young fans" watch TV and movies? through streaming. you could just as easily argue that this makes it more appealing to the younger crowd.

my only problem is that it should be free.

the BTN buys the overflow channels during football season. they dont own that bandwidth. its either not available or cost effective for basketball, which is understandable.

going back to my post above, you are talking about spending a ton of money the produce a broadcast that only relative handful of people in the BTN Footprint will watch.

OK people ether pay the $10-$14 to watch online or pay the money to go. If you want the game for free listen to the game on WHO. This is how people use to do it. Seriously whats wrong with listening to the radio. You could throw the radio on and mute the TV and watch a football game or whatever. My brother put it on the radio and stuck spongebob on the TV without sound to keep his kids attention.

The fact that I have the option to stream the game (even though you have to pay) is better then not being able to!

Your argument is "older" people don't want to pay for it. I am older and pay for it. If your older then me then you grew up listening to the games on the radio. Get nostalgic and heat up the tubes!

Seriously?? Bottom line is before the BTN took over you could watch almost every game on local television. Now we are lucky to get any non-conference games. BTN was touted as providing access to more games "on television". You pay more for cable now if you have Mediacom because they added BTN, you shouldn't have to also pay $10 to watch a game.

Earlier in the football season, Pollard from ISU blocked a game from being televised so that people would have to pay to watch online through ISU website. People were complaining that Pollard is a used car sales man, etc., for taking advantage of his fan base....The BTN is basically doing the same thing to Iowa fans. If you don't want to listen to it on the radio and would like to actually watch...you have to pay.

you cant show a live TV broadcast over an internet connection. how does the signal get from carver to your local station to your TV?

im not sure what your second point is. if a local station wants to outbid the BTN for the rights, i suppose that they are free to try. i dont think you are grasping the amount of money involved.

1) I thought the game was being shown on tv today just not live. It's a replay of last nights game. Not a replay on the internet.

2) I'm not understanding why tv stations could do it before the BTN was around, but now they can't? What happened in the years since the BTN became involved that made it so much more expensive?

first off, TV stations were more profitable in the 80's, and basketball was a huge draw. when KWWL started the Iowa Television Network with Ron Steele and Tony Powers doing the games, they earned over a 90 share in KWWL's market. That is just insanely ridiculous.

second, the BTN uses the Student U program as a tool for journalism students wanting to get into broadcasting and will likely provide a pipeline of talent into the network itself after a couple more years.

most importantly, the BTN owns the rights to broadcast the games. They pay huge money and this is why iowa and every school gets a huge check every year. even if a local outfit wanted to do it, they still have to buy the rights from the BTN. mediacom is doing this for a few games coming up- IPFW, Arkansas State, and Boise State. for these, you will likely see rob brooks and mac doing the game, rather than a "student U" production.
