Did Barta offer the Hawk NC games to local stations or was Mediascum the only one that had a chance? Barta will not answer my E-Mails. Does he ever made himself available to the fans. In my area fans are really upset and would like some answers. Does he ever go on a call-in show. In live in a small town and more people are getting upset with Midiascum and getting dishes. If you have any access to Barta perhaps you could ask him about this situation. Thanks

i have a dtv - what channel are the non conference games on?

Why do I have a mental picture of Westview clutching a copy of "The Catcher in the Rye" while standing outside Barta's house?

barta has quickly responded to every email ive ever written, as well as those sent by people i know, as long as you are courteous and respectful.

what stations do you think would bump programming for iowa basketball?

I will also add that if btn student u is doing the game and mediacom isn't producing it there may not even be a satellite truck at carver.

I was very pleasant and courteous to Barta. I think he did not answer is because he did not like the subject.

I thought this issue is a BTN issue and not a university issue. As in they have the rights to the games and choose to show them on their internet feeds as apposed to work out deals with local stations.

I believe it's Barta's decision as to who gets the Iowa nc games. I could be wrong.

you didn't answer my question. you say that people are ditching mediacom and going to the dish. what channels are the nc games on satellite providers?

i do not think he is avoiding you because he doens't like the topic.

I get your point. I should have been clearer. The people I known ditched mediacom before the BB season. Also some are not sports fans. I still would like to hear from Barta. If he offered the games to other stations I have no problem.

listen dude, the BTN owns the rights to the games. barta has no direct say in who gets to broadcast them, as if this decision would ever be left up to one person anyways.

the ESPN family gets first crack at most of the games.

the BTN televises the great majority of other games. iowa and other bad teams get the short end of the stick right now because of poor teams and fan support.

the other games are left to the individual schools through the BTDN (a collaboration of streaming content from the schools), but the rights to these OOC games (like tonight) are retained by the BTN, partially for their "student U" program. this means that the BTN produces the game and provides the equipment and talent to do so. these are generally online-only broadcasts that are streamed directly from the arena over the internet. no satellite truck is required and thats why your local station cant just pick up these games even if they wanted to. it could happen if there was some fiber optic connection at the arena but i am not sure that carver has that. i read somewhere that Hilton may have recently installed one.

however, the BTN does sell the rights to SOME OF these games to companies like mediacom. this means that mediacom provides the truck, talent, production crew and satellite time, and the games are shown on their proprietary channel like MC22. in this instance it would be technically possible for your local channel or ESPN Full Court to carry the game, but mediacom doesnt want that to happen because they paid for it and its a competitive advantage for them.

i am not an expert but this is the best that i can explain it after a long discussion with someone in the business.

Iowa has no say in where these games are broadcast. The networks choose what they want, then the BTN chooses what it wants, and the leftovers go online now. That's just the way that it is.

Once Iowa starts to win more games consistently, fewer out of conference games will be online.

I understand the BTN's perspective, but from the fan's perspective we see less Iowa basketball than we used to before the BTN. I used to be a Mediacom subscriber and they used to carry most of the non-conference schedule on local channels (within Iowa). When the BTN came out I jumped to Dish thinking that every game would be televised because they have 6 BTN channels. I feel we have been screwed over and it hurts Iowa basketball because people can't watch these games. They are playing exciting b-ball even if it is against bad competition; it's still exciting to watch them score pts. The BTN is hurting Fran's momentum in rebuilding the program and getting fans interested again.

I am die hard and it pisses me off to know end.

this is what i dont understand. the BTN is not hurting momentum one bit. we record TV shows. we get a new DVD every 3 days. we watch streaming netflix and hulu and vudu and youtube and porn. is watching the game online really a bad thing? people from all over the world can watch the games and many people actually PREFER to stream their content.

oh yeah, did i mention that we got $22,000,000 from the BTN last year????

It wasn't like the whole country was getting to watch the games back in the day when Raycom would put them on, locally it was great but there was virtually no exposure for those games outside the area. Now the games can be picked up anywhere in the world. For $10 a month I consider that a pretty good deal, considering what other forms of entertainment costs these days (movie theaters, concerts, the champagne room, etc.)

agreed. to say that Barta is not answering an email on this topic is absurd (because of a decision he did or didn't make). He isn't directing games to TV, that is at the conference level decision.

I watch the games on the internet, which is better than nothing. However a large amount of BB fans are older people who do not have computers or would not know how to get the games.

how is this killing momentum?
