For all the apathetic Iowa fans ....

And for all the fans that are tired of Ferentz ball, and those that think the way Iowa plays is "freaking boring", and those who are tired of 6-8 win seasons, and those that think that Brian needs to be fired, lets come up with some solutions. I mean, it does no good to just whine and complain about something, so lets brainstorm in your dream scenario of firing the entire coaching staff and starting over.

Only thing I ask is that your solution is grounded in reasonable reality. That means you cant pick Nick Saban or Dabo Swinney as head coaches. So, here are the questions:

Head coach suggestion
Offensive coordinator suggestion
Defensive coordinator suggestion (we fired everyone, remember?)
What type of system would you like to run that meets your needs for excitement and entertainment?

Fire away!

Kirk makes a deal with Phil Parker and Gary Barta. Kirk then retires as head coach.

Phil Parker takes over as head coach. Seth Wallace gets promoted to LB/Co-DC. Chris Ash is brought in to be the new DB coach. Bring back Jim Reid to become the new LB/Co-DC coach.

Brian gets demoted back to OL coach but is also made the assistant head coach. For the new OC bring in Kevin Wilson. Polasek gets let go.

My dream scenario:

Kirk stays as HC
Phil Parker named his assistant HC
Brian goes to to NE to be Bill's "yes" man again
Kirk hires an OC and completely stays out of his way

Edit: You said, "reasonable reality". Brian isn't going anywhere while Kirk is there. No way in hell.

Do not forget that these same critics want to Fire not only the football staff, but also the basketball staff, the AD, and the University President. They claim that would resolve our problems. They don’ t liken the Board of Regents or the loyal big donors, either. Lots of work ahead!

Head coach - bob stoops if he has the fire and wants to coach again.

OC - I dont follow college football enough to know the names of some real good OC's not named Chow, or Lane Kiffin, and some others that are right now head coaches. I guess if Lincoln Riley or Tom Herman are fired get them as OC

DC - Again I do not know too many DC's really available so I go with getting Venables from Clemson to help win a Big Championship.

Style - I still think in colder, wetter weather in October and November in the Big 10 you have to be able to run the ball so I do like I formation with fullback or single back but I would go with the pistol formation when in the shotgun. I would put an emphasis on a QB with decent speed, mobility and running ability but not make them a main runner but use their athleticism for rollouts, bootlegs, QB draws and for extending plays and getting out of trouble to move the sticks.

On defense the Parkers have been great and I like that overall defense but I would like more blitzing to force negative plays. Get more substitution for down and distance with nickle and dime packages. And blitz and zone blitz. Double A gap blitzes right in the Qbs face to make them throw quick short or bring the ball down and get flushed and sacked.

Recruit some more speed.

KF & Company would head a new program by 4 o'clock if you fired them at 3:30. Now that is reality.

Get anyone with the name Ferentz out of Iowa city. Brian has no business by the OC, nor would he be at any other school where daddy wasn't head coach. Polasek should have been the OC, and maybe let Brian just stand on the sidelines with a dummy headset because our vaunted O line had already started going to shit as soon as Brian took over that job.

Re: the part I put in "bold"...

Uh, good luck with that. Just sayin'.

Venables is pulling north of 2 million because they want to make it impossible for someone to hire him as a HC unless it is a tier 1 gig. I'm not sure how good of a coach he actually is because they have had ungodly talent on defense for several years. Their defense last year was honestly on par with some of those stacked Miami and FSU teams back in the '90's. The ACC is utter trash and Dabo has used that to build a super team of kids who want to play in the playoffs and don't want to try their luck with a hard SEC schedule and an actual conference title game.

Ferentz retires taking his son with him. We offer Campbell and if he accepts let him hire his own staff

No way would Campbell make a lateral move to Iowa.

By staying in the realm of true possibility. Iowa needs to get a G5 coach with an offensive mind, hope to retain somebody from defense

Hire Jason Candle from Toledo, and throw money at Phil to keep him on board.

so you’re asking a group of people who mock the Husker fans’ perception and expectations of their team but have the same perception and expectations of our team ... to be reasonably realistic.

C’mon dw! The purpose of the interweb is emoting and unreasonableness has a place to relieve so western civ doesn’t collapse.

Great suggestions, keep them coming!! I do have to say I am a bit disappointed that we have such little interaction with this post in relation to the apathy posts, but we will take what we can get. Remember, we are being constructive here.

After weeding through all the Ferentz should go stuff (which was the assumption to begin the post), this is what we have for our new, non-boring team that is going to not only win every game, but be entertaining and exciting at the same time.

Head coach: Phil Parker, Matt Campbell and Bob Stoops
DC: Seth Wallace/Jim Reid, Brent Venables
DB coach: only one suggestion here, Chris Ash
OC: Kevin Wilson, Lincoln Riley, Tom Herman, and Tim Polasek
style: only one suggestion here as well, i formation with the pistol. Emphasis on running QB and recruit more speed.
Oh, and the suggestion of adding Art Briles, Urban Meyer and Mark Dantanio as well.

Sounds good. Just a few things though.

1. Phil is a great guy, great DC and we are glad to have him. But do you think he would be able to guide the offense better than Kirk?
2. Venables has made his name a Clemson with a recruiting base of Georgia/SC/TN and NC. Stoops and Riley have made their names at Oklahoma, where their recruiting base was mostly Texas. Herman has made his name at Ohio State, Houston and now Texas, with the recruiting base of Ohio and Texas respectively. You can throw Briles in with Texas, Urb with Florida and Ohio, and Dantonio is a downgrade from Kirk as their offense and style is worse and more boring than Iowa's, so we will disregard him. So here are some recruiting numbers, and interestingly enough these numbers stay fairly consistent from year to year.

In 2020:

Iowa: 5* - 0, 4* - 2, 3* - 10
Ohio: 5* - 1, 4* - 4, 3* - 98
GA: 5* - 3, 4* - 30, 3* - 178
TX: 5* - 5, 4* - 47, 3* - 264

3. Keep in mind that Stoops, Riley, Herman, and Urb all make or have made way more money than Kirk, and it would take much more than that to come to Iowa.
4. Kevin Wilson is the OC at Ohio State, and would only leave there now for a HC position. But he was a HC once, at Indiana, where threw the ball a lot, didn't play much defense but were exciting.
5. Matt Campbell has lost to Kirk each time. Good coach, but is that really a step up? Would he bring his staff with him? Is that staff better than Iowa's?

Lets keep this going!

That is my point exactly DD. The Huskers have done this before. They fired a 9 win guy in Solich, a 9 win guy in Pelini, only to hire a 5 win guy in Callahan because their play was boring and Callahan was going to update the offense, only to fire him to get a 4 win guy in whatever the last guys name was, to hire a current 5 win guy in Frost. Maybe Frost works out, maybe he doesn't, but then again maybe if they had kept Pelini, maybe they would have had a better program all along and maybe it is better now. It is the whole grass is greener on the other side thing. Hope is emotional, and that is what their program is built on, when in reality logic tells them without cheating, without Prop 48, they have a small recruiting base and being able to consistently bring in kids that can run that system is going to be very difficult at best.

Yes I do remember hearing last year in the playoffs that Venebles is paid big big bucks, crazy.
