Football players and social media

He is a lightning rod for criticism. He better put a cork on it. And this article was as much about the fans. Jone completed 66 percent of his passes. Not bad.

Fran only kept players off Twitter after the McCabe fiasco. Now they still tweet during the season, as well. I know you can post horror stories of Twitter but I can tell you as a 22 year old kid myself I have posted some very dumb stuff to Twitter I regretted. They're college students. Can't help but thinking the Twitter ban for football hurts recruiting. Say what you want but it's 2015 and this is something an 18 year old kid will consider.

I mean the nation wanted to crucify jameis Winston but he's doing just fine and hasn't turned out to be a "thug ghetto criminal"

Yeah, someone has to pull him aside and tell him to dial it back a bit.

The sexual assault stuff aside........I think Winston is just a big goof ball like Shaq or Gronk he just likes to have a good time and make people laugh. Now if you want that type of guy as your starting QB that is a different debate.

It is the world you grew up in or are growing up in. I don't know if banning Twitter is the "right move" or not. I know college and pro teams bring in media consultants to speak on how to handle social media.......I guess I really do not know what the answer is other than maturity.

You posting something that reflects badly upon you is completely different than having someone post that then reflects badly on a team or university. Right or wrong the responsibility of a scholarship athlete is greater than that on regular students, as their profile is 10000 X greater.

The thing is kids are gonna be kids, no matter what. I totally understand a coach banner posting on Twitter as it is just one more thing to have to police and worry about. Plus look at what happened to Cardale, all he was doing was posting about a win, and he gets attacked by his own fan base. Now It is just another thing to get into the head of the team you are tying to coach.

So if you think Iowa fans are bad, look what happens when Cardale Jones tweets about a win.

Kirk and Fran have it absolutely right. Keep the players off twitters, nothing, and I mean nothing good happens on twitter for these athletes.

I probably wouldn't ban it at the start but tell them:

If just ONE person posts something idiotic or argues with fans then all social media is off the board.

I have no problem with coaches banning players from it - because it is a often a crapstorm waiting to happen.
