Football attendance: IL, MN, Miami

Interesting read on Illinois:

from article:
CHAMPAIGN — Two hours and 45 minutes before kickoff Saturday, the lush green grass that carpets the donor parking lot adjacent to Memorial Stadium looks like a golf fairway.
Well mowed. Drops of dew glistening in the morning sun. And stunningly empty.
There was one car in the lot at 8:15 a.m.
Too early, you say?
Nonsense. Anyone who has ever attended a game at Michigan, Wisconsin,
Michigan State, Iowa, Ohio State, Penn State or Nebraska can tell you that there’s no such thing as “too early†for enthusiastic Big Ten football crowds.
They arrive long before kickoff — even an 11 a.m. kickoff — and are neck-deep in barbeque and Bloody Mary’s by the time the traditional breakfast hour rolls around. And you can bet that two hours and 45 minutes before kickoff, there was more than one car in the most prime parking lot on the property.

Actual attendance for the season opener was thought to be about 27,000. There were 30,000 or perhaps a little more Saturday on a postcard-perfect day.
What’s it like outside Memorial Stadium at 8:15 a.m.?
It’s like the perfect party setting in which most of the invitations got lost in the mail.

Miami:

Minnesota:
Despite building a $288 million stadium and approving beer sales, Minnesota football has declined markedly in popularity. In just four years in TCF Bank Stadium, the Gophers have lost 80 percent of their student ticket base.

I went to a game there in 90s when Iowa steamrolled a Top 5 IL team with Nick Bell and ended up in Rose Bowl (I think IA and IL were both ranked in top 5). It was a nice place to tailgate and the game was mostly full as I remember (thanks to Iowa fans). I remember being surprised about how vacant the tailgating area around stadium was although it was quite festive then.

This is just sad whomever you are playing.

I very much remember that game despite being very very young. Didn't Bell have something like over 100yds in the 1st quarter? If not, he over it not very far into the second quarter.

That game was 1990. Iowa entered the game ranked 13, illannoy was 5.
We pizz-pounded them in all phases of the game. Hayden pulled a fake field goal for a TD. It was over before halftime. I watched it with an apartment-full of illannoy grads. Won a lot of money off of those losers.
I have the game on VHS tape...should prolly xfer it to DVD one o' these days.

Color me impressed. We did a fake field goal?

Because Hayden rolled that way. He hated illannoy and wanted to crush 'em. Mission was definitely accomplished.
Ferrets did not learn the killer instinct during his years working for Coach Fry. More's the pity.

Jim Hartlieb threw the fake FG TD pass to Matt Whitaker.

1990 -- saw action in 10 of 12 games as a backup to all-Big Ten quarterback Matt Rodgers...completed 5-7 passes for 71 yards and one TD...rushed for 161 yards and two scores on just 16 carries...connected with Matt Whitaker on 14-yard TD pass off fake field goal at Illinois...that touchdown staked Hawkeyes to 35-7 first half lead...also had career-long 36-yard run vs. the Illini...hit 3-3 passes for 41 yards against Northwestern...gained 63 yards rushing (5 carries) with two TDs vs. Cincinnati...two carries each vs. Wisconsin (11 yards), Northwestern (23 yards), and Purdue (30 yards)...shared special teams MVP vs. Illinois with Jeff Skillett.

I remember that year too. Iowa only had to go up to a winless Minnesota and pull of the win over a winless(in Big 10 play I think) Gopher squad to be outright Big10 champs. And they lost. Luckily Michigan beat OSU, and Iowa backed into the Rose Bowl. And were then womped by the Washington Huskies.

Pro sports cities. "Fans" are the ones with connection to the school. If Iowa had a pro team I would think fan support wouldn't be as strong as it is now.

Always liked the way Hayden approach the game wanting to kick the opponents teeth in. He had an edge to him.

yeah, except that isn't applicable to illannoy, since their ugly-as-sin campus is 160 miles/three hours from Chicago.

Well, I was in 4th grade during this game, and my drawings of ninja turtles impressed all of the girls.

That's when they had Ki-jana Carter, right? Thought they also had Brunnell?
