Food Thread

I saw the thread and must add a product that really works well for me.

Last spring I purchased new grates for the grill as a ‘hail mary’ attempt to re-kindle the relationship with my grill-friend. ;)

I swear I have never cooked a better steak, chop, chicken, you name it, never a dry piece of meat since then. And I have effed up more than my fair share of good cuts of meat.

I grilled through the winter for the first time in years.

That looks intriguing to me. I’d like to have one for my Weber Kettle but it’s just as expensive as the grill itself. Would it be worth over a hundred bucks on charcoal?

No. You prolly gotta wash that thing after every use, too, or else it will get all rank.

Yes the price was a big leap! You can get say, two of them to get that pro grill mark look. But for me it was as much about holding in the heat, to get that 700+ degree surface temp sear. The added bonus is the lack of flare ups. Not a 100% decrease but significant.

I use one of the spiral stainless wire brushes. Works great. 5 minute clean up.

Sorry, I failed to mention that I am using a propane square type grill, older Pacific Gas Specialties model. Can’t speak to how they’d work on a kettle, but I watched several videos on their website and YouTube that had a demo for every type of grill.

Interesting. So these don't replace your existing grates, they just sit on top? I have a pellet smoker/grill, and really don't like the flimsy grates it came with. May have to check these out.

You can put them on top, sure.

I bit the bullet and replaced all of my original grates with a set of these, they really hold in the heat for searing. And they also help to even the heat across the cook surface.

Ok. In looking at the pictures, most have them sitting on top of an existing set of grates, so I assumed they weren't custom-sized for all the different model grills out there. If they do custom-fit for my grill, I would definitely replace.

Sounds really good. Will check out when current grate is starting to go away.

Brought these home yesterday and they’re gonna get fried up with a bunch more in my backyard at 6pm tonight for anyone who strolls through. BYOB.

Fry: I'm as old school as it gets. Many moons ago I purchased a pan from Gander Mountain that barely fit inside a large Weber grill. It's four inches deep. I use 10 pounds of Kingsford charcoal. Other brand don't work as well. I let it heat up to 375 then start adding fillets. I move them across the pan and keep adding. By the time I get them all the way over they are done. Sometimes I'll have help removing them so I can keep adding. It works better than any commercial fryer I've ever seen or used!

Not a bad way to spend a late spring evening but how are the gnats?
I went to the local high school track where I live for a nice jog this weekend, the gnats are now coming out in full force. Not as bad if you use the inside lanes compared to the outside lanes next to grass.

I was out late this afternoon where Dubuque's Heritage Trail morphs into the local Bee Branch flood control renovation. Gnats aren't as bad at 4:30 in the afternoon as they would be at dawn or dusk. Saturday morning at 6:30 am was a different story. I had a nice breakfast when I went running.

High school/college tracks are nice for when rain or bad weather are threatening. You are never more than a quarter mile from your car. I once got caught in a thunderstorm on an out and back jog where lightning was flashing all around me and I was two miles from my vehicle. I thought I had enough time to beat the storm or be close to finished when it started. I was wrong. Scary times to say the least!
