Flush it

It's true that the Villanova and ISU games are not going to sink Iowa's season, but for Pete's sake, I wish people would quit acting like it doesn't matter.

As someone else pointed out, Iowa missed out on an NCAA bid last year because it had a lack of quality wins, particularly away from Carver. The Nova/ISU games were two golden opportunities that Iowa had to notch one or two of those types of wins, and it coughed up both games.

Yeah, there are going to be a lot of opportunities for good wins the next few months, but it would have been great to have a bit of a head start on a good resume, and have a little more margin for error.

Not to mention winning the Nova and/or ISU games would help with seeding, even if Iowa doesn't "need" those wins.

Agreed

We would have made the tourney last year if you replace loses to va tech and Wichita st with loses to this years isu and Villanova teams. Then have our best wins against this years nd and Xavier teams. That would have been plenty to get us in.

I guess to put it simply, give us this years OOC schedule last year and we would have been in.

Agreed.

Many are worried about a couple of early season losses to ranked teams. What was Wisconsin's out of conference record last year? Were they on the bubble? What was their seed? I don't know the answers to these questions exactly but I'm thinking they came into Big 10 play at 8-5 and got a pretty good seed when all was said and done. Most of us thought they would get blasted in conference but it didn't happen. And I don't think anything they did out of conference negatively impacted them when the 18 conference games and BTT were over...but I could be wrong. Anyone that has details at their fingertips do share. Thanks!

Completely agree... Iowa didn't "have" to win against ISU, but it could cost them a seed in the tournament. A road win in Ames is a win that can help move your seed from a 6 to a 5. So the game mattered, but as many people are saying, we have plenty of opportunities to win big games in conference play.

If we even go 9-9 in conference, I think we are in this year. Still hard to tell this early because some of the last spots are decided by unlikely conference tourney champions, etc. Let's just hope we're not in that situation. I don't think we will be.

I agree. I just have a hard time brushing off the two games we've lost, because those were great opportunities.

Still, with an RPI of 21 (as of yesterday), Iowa is still in good shape for a bid AND a solid seed. But the more big games Iowa can win, the better we look for the committee, and the easier the path Iowa has in the early rounds of the tournament. I'd rather be seeded higher than be facing a 1 or 2 seed in the second round. That's the way I look at it.

Personally if that is what the cost of those 2 losses ends up being I would have no problem. Iowa won't be a top 3 seed anyway (they could be but I don't see it at this point) so they need to stay off the 4/13, 5/12 or 8/9 line. The ideal seed would be a 6/11 or 7/10 lines as you wouldn't see the #1 seed until the elite 8.

You can flush it all you want but this game will be brought up by the talking heads in March when the subject of bubble teams comes up. This one will haunt us.

This is not only wrong but totally backwards. Iowa went into Hilton as the better team and left as the better team despite the rankings. What is galling is that, for debatable reasons, they lost. If we are on the bubble come March, it won't be because of this game. It's more likely that this game might save ISU from falling off the bubble than push Iowa off it come March.

ISU had the luxury of playing both Michigan and Iowa at home. If those two games would have been away games, they would have been losses. Last year I thought ISU was the better team and Iowa won.
BYU was a quality win, but BYU gave that game away. ISU doesn't have a bench and that is going to cost them down the road. Personally, I think Iowa is a final 4 team. I don't see why not.

Wisconsin also had had the advantage of a nice schedule. Florida at home. The did not play well on their two road wins, but still won. I see Iowa handing them their first loss.

I agree with this. It won't keep them out of the NCAA Tournament but it will make it hard for them to go far. It could keep them out if someone goes down for 6 weeks like Oglesby did for Iowa. We can take a 6 week hit this year and keep rolling. If ISU loses a player from their short rotation it will result in some challenges and probable losses.

I'd rather not be a 7/10 either. I'd rather try and stay away from playing a 1 or 2 until the Sweet 16. But once you are in the S16 it doesn't matter very much. I don't see the difference between the 1 and 2 seeds being too much, this year anyway. So I'd be thrilled with a 5 or 6 seed. You're right though, 8/9 is the worst.

And to anyone about to reply with it's only December, too early to talk seeds, etc. I know, I know... it's just fun.

The part that can really upset you is thinking Iowa would be what , 12-0, right now if they didnt cough up the nova and isu games,

Rated 25th now they might have been rated 15.

But guess what, if this team improves , and really does well in the B1G they are going to be ranked 15th or higher at the end of the season.

I wanted them to beat ISU but it is over and it is one game with much bigger fish to take down (mixed metaphor/cliche) later this year.

I don't really care what seed we get. We have to beat them all eventually to win the thing so put us in a bracket and let's play some ball.

I bet we would be top 10 if we were undefeated.
