First Hawkeye game ever

My 3 1/2 year old great niece is a big Hawkeye fan. My avatar is of her watching a football game last year. For a while, she has been carrying around her backpack saying - "Addie go see Big Hawks, take backpack" so.......I got tickets for her Mom and Dad and I for the Miami of Ohio game. Even called the ticket office to see if the clear tote could have stickers on it because they will not let her bring her backpack into Kinnick. Had to get approval from the Administration but they said ok so we will be heading out with a sticker-laden clear tote on Saturday.

I realize this could be trouble for someone her age but she is so pumped!!! She will be riding the train and everything. (We are seated right by an exit, just in case) :)When was your first game?

1956, I was 5 or 6, I barely understood football, the stadium was so huge and the players seemed so small. My mom and dad took me and my brother and other relatives were in another car.

If you hadnt thought about it there wasnt an Interstate 80 from Des Moines to Iowa City back then and wow the traffic was slow on Highway 6 once we got within about 20 miles of Iowa City (from what I could tell by the adults talking).

I was 10 and remember that only one of my brothers got to go with us and I felt so lucky. Very little memory of the game - that was during the 19 straight losing seasons! We lost that game to the Gophers in 1967.

1989 vs Illinois. My Dad and I stayed until the bitter end, a 31-9 loss. We watched the bands perform and after my Dad said, "Even Illinois band kicked our butts today".

I went to my first game in the 60's and it was against the gooofers. It was snowing something terrible.

I was in Boy Scouts , 12 years old, watched Archie Griffith carve Iowa into little tiny pieces, but damn I was on the field, no better experience than that....I hope she has a great time.....everyone deserves to be a Hawkeye, good job starting her out at 3.....

1996 vs Michigan St. I remember it was the week after we lost unexpectedly at Tulsa. MSU had us down early but clawed back in the second half to win.

Back in the 70s Iowa played Illinois and lost on a long field goal if I remember correctly. I won the tickets in WHO in the football contest they used to do. I new I was close and was afraid I'd win the weekend in MSP. The tickets were exciting to have even if Iowa wasn't very good.

Penn St. Franco Harris and Lydel Mitchell were in the backfield.2nd one was USC with Ricky Bell,John McKay was the coach and we were ahead at halftime.Students threw oranges at him.

My 4 month old grandson will also be going to his first Hawkeye Game. He will be sitting in the shade of the press box so should be able to stay fairly cool. His father was about 6 weeks old when he attended his first game 30 years ago.

I was 10 or so - around 1980 - Iowa played Drake and won handily - now I take my 2 daughters every opening game. they are now 14 & 17

Thank you - we are very excited to see how she reacts to the crowd and she is hoping to meet Herky!!

The Hawkeye Marching Band does a pregame show 90 minutes before kickoff. It's usually at the Rec building just NW of Kinnick, but due to construction I believe it will be on the Krause Plaza (southside of the stadium near the Nile Kinnick statue).

Have fun!
