Ferentz will always do it his way

And his way has been successful in his tenure at Iowa but a couple of things caught my attention Saturday

First I thought sure if we won the toss we would defer?? Our offense Our defense the weather. But like almost always he decides to take the ball. He has deferred but most often he does that and sometimes I just have to wonder/ Fortunately the 3 and out was against Nebraska and didn't hurt us

In his post game he almost defiantly said some things don't change in football. I assume back to the blocking tackling arguments BF spoke of at times. Maybe right? but then I remembered my old Jr High days and I played QB in the Single Wing and I wondered why we don't use that anymore?

Ferentz has done a great job at Iowa and if it wasn't for the Northwestern coach would probably be coach of the year, BUT if you are holding out hope that he will hire a "modern Day" OC i wouldn't hold my breath

I get it if you have an offense with a pulse, but when you don't and you're facing a good defense as we were in Nebraska, I wish we would defer. And, as you mentioned, let our defense set the tone.

We've deferred quite a few times this year. Let your offense get its bearings and see if you can gain some second half momentum.

My thoughts:

Basically, each team will get the ball to start a half. The other team will take the wind. You typically don't want to give the team the ball and the wind because that maximizes the amount of time they get the wind, since you don't if you'll have the ball to start the 2nd quarter when you get the wind.

So that leaves each team with the ball into the wind to start the half, which will mean the team that kicks to start the 2nd half will get the wind in the 4th.

My guess is that KF wants the wind in the 4th. When there's no wind, the choice is which half to start on defense. If I'm the HC and I know PP has time to make adjustments, I would rather have them get the ball to start the 2nd half. I'm banking on a stop and decent field position to start the half. Now, with our offense, one of the halves will start with a good possibility of a punt and decent field position for the other team. The hope might be (and this may be a stretch) to get a first down or 2 before the other team has a chance to adjust to wrinkles you have put in, usually blocking schemes.

Having said that, I'd rather start the 2nd half with the ball because half the time you will get the ball to end the 1st half and to start the 2nd half. Also, once that first possession of the game is over, you will get more possessions the rest of the game.

But I'm not a HOF coach, so...

Wasn’t KF’s plan to get the wind in the 4th quarter? If so, brilliant!

This was clearly why.
