Ferentz: We Have a Lot of Work To Do

Q: Garmon and Hill, have they been what you expected?
Ferentz: They have been doing fine. This was unfortunate. We don’t tackle a lot in practice and today was a big day. We may have to do more of it than we expected so we can find out how they play when they do get tackled. Brad Rogers has been in and out with injuries, too. It’s hard to get continuity.

Don't like the sound of that.

I think that bullock will play a lot the first game - but I want to see Hill! iowa guy - a bit removed from the game and now back - and he should be hungry. btw - the little tidbit of a video we saw of him on the BTN showed that he carries the ball correctly and runs hard. as far as garmon goes - he carries the ball too low and not on the point = fumbler - hope that gets corrected!

Honestly Im more concerned with B J Lowery right now than anyone else...we will find a couple quality Rbers. We will also have a solid Dbackfield regardless, but IMO Lowery is special and with him this is potentially a dominant 2ndary and one of our best and that is saying a ton. Some of that depends on the DL, but I honestly think they'll be better than expected too. Hyde and Lowery could be our best combo ever IMO of course. So a nagging knee sprain would be bothersome...

does that read "neither can hold on to the ball"?

I agree, and from the Transcript it sounded as if Lowrey has a significant knee sprain and will be out awhile. His likely replacement is already out for the year so.. secondary now becomes another potential problem spot. Most Iowa teams cannot afford injuries but this one... jeez.

Focus, Focus, Focus. Stay positive here. Gotta admit, a little less optimistic after today. I'll be positive again, unless GameFilm or someone else brings me back down to reality.

The DL is my concern, but I guess our OL is pretty good, so I hope that's a lot of it, and a benefit to practice against them.

Golfer,
I don't come by very often anymore but you are really quite a positive sort anymore and I really like it. I know we've had our spats but I'm sincere here. As far as your thoughts go….I don't think our DL is at all a finished product and I’m hoping that our OL really is that good and as Dom & Davis round into game shape and the youngsters get more training we will have something…

If I was a betting man, (and I am on the craps table, in moderation, where I understand how to lower my odds to within a .5% of the house's odds), I would never bet, or handicap college football.

I have this sense this year, and that's all, that we'll be ok. College football isn't professional. Team chemistry, motivation and momentum are so much more important here than at higher levels. Hard to predict these intangibles, but I have this feeling we'll be ok this year.

A typical Iowa year. We will get better as the season progresses, and we really haven't seen that in a couple of seasons.

I am of this opinion too, Golfer. I really do think we will be okay this season. I think a season like 2008 seems likely, where we start to play some really, really good football down the stretch. The only thing is, our opening schedule (first five games) are so weak that it leads me to believe the season as a whole is going to pretty special.

Hear, here.....I’m of the opinion that it is becoming the real deciding factor in all of life, but I think it is especially true of our Iowa Hawkeyes....:D

Good call!

I'm of that same opinion!

I am "the" optimist, except sometimes with my adversaries (and I’m working on that I promise….:D) but after searching around the web and over at the gazette in particular (morehouse) it seems like a pretty typical scrimmage. i/e: lots of differing thoughts and lots to work on and lots to be excited about. On the positive slant I think it’s quite interesting that Bigach (who I thought really progressed as the season unfolded) is currently 2nd string, though to be fair he is probably at worst the 5th DL right now, it seems. I think it’s also interesting that with Draper and Buford it looks like Iowa has again found athletic, quality Db’s where others have looked past. Hyde, Lowery, Godfrey, Spievey, Greenwood, etc, etc, etc…all guys who came in and played early and often.

It also seems like maybe this Lowery injury isn’t overly threatening and this Weisman is very intriguing. If this is the same kid who walked-on out of Air Force I read up on him last season and he came from a solid school here in Illinois and I remember thinking what a blessing it was to get a kid of this caliber to walk-on for us. Hopefully that comes to fruition.

I also find it quite interesting, if not alarming that we have had so many kids walk-on from out of state?!

I also noted that this Cole Fisher who I believe they have been high on is now 3rd team (still early I know) behind Marcus Collins, Travis Perry and Jim Poggi. Collins excited me from the time I watched his videos. Shocking to me that an athlete (at least to this untrained eye) of that caliber, though smaller in stature wasn’t more highly thought of. He was fast, strong and explosive when tracking the ball and then exploding through ball carrier. Also nice to see maybe Poggi is finally making a push and I’ve heard super things about Perry (another walk-on) in particular that he is a terrific athlete.

In fact it appears there are potentially lots of good young “athletes” all over the field.

Biggest question is D-Line. TE covers up for receiver depth and Vandy makes or breaks the season.

It was only one play but I thought I saw Collins get folded in half trying to make a tackle by the goal line. Again, only one play but it led me to wonder whether he's stout enough to play the inside run.
