Ferentz still has backing of administration

Best decade in Iowa football history? Seriously Barta? We play 12 games now, an extra cupcake, so subtract a win from each and every season under Ferentz, and then think about three Rose Bowls between 81 to 91.

If you subtract those Rose Bowl losses from those 80's teams, they look even better.

If you taxpayers are that upset with the state school you should contact your elected representatives or write the Board of Regents.

The Ferentz decade was a great decade. There were things done in that decade that had never been done in Iowa football history, or hadn't been done in five or six decades.

Four end of season rankings inside the Top 10. Only Ferentz and Evy can lay claim to so many Top 10 finishes in the Final poll. Iowa won a BCS bowl game, first time that happened since the Evy era.

Fry's best 10 years produced a higher winning percentage than Ferentz's 2000's decade. But in some ways it was one of the best decades in Iowa football history.

Three embarrassing loses in the Rose Bowl. Iowa was outscored 119-62 in the losses. The UCLA & second Washington game weren't as close as the final score would indicate. Both games were pretty much over at halftime. Iowa was outscored 57-17 in the first half of those games.

Plus, only one top ten finish. Iowa finished ranked #10 in '85. The only other time Hayden finished in the top ten was after the '91 season at #9. Iowa didn't win the bowl game that year either.

I love revisionist history.

Except for Evy's last five seasons, the eight seasons from 2002 to 2009 was the best run in Iowa football history. No eight year run Hayden had was even close.

Iowa will never see what Evy accomplished.

Even if he didn't have the backing of the administration, and I'm not saying he doesn't, does anyone really believe they would come out and say anything different?

yeah, let's think about those. especially the 1st one with iowa's record being 8-3 going into such bowl.

not taking anything away from fry, but come on.

it's honestly real tough for some to give even an inch of credit.

funny that the high powered 'air hayden' offenses produced none of the three top ranked WRs in iowa football history...

Of course they wouldn't put out a critical or non supportive statement. They would fire him instead.

Playing 13 games a year against fast-moving spread offenses might have something to do with that.

Fans should look at the non-conference opponents under Fry and compare them to the schedule KF played. The disparity is pretty obvious.

You cant really compare Hayden to Kirk, then it was the big 2 ONLY no one had but tOSU and UM in the B10 for years. His "air hayden" was a big deal the B10 was a ground game leauge. While Hayden doesnt currently have and top 3 recievers on the record books, he did when he retired. he still has the top QB, Long also spread the ball around alot more than Kirk/KoK over all.

saying the we didnt even win the bowl game in 91, is distorting the view imho. we went 10-1-1, 7-1 B10 we tied BYU in the Holiday bowl.

Hayden never won a BCS level bowl true. Pre BCS the B10 only had one bowl at that level the Rose, where we played the P10 champ. Same with poor satements that get posted about "jan bowls" the only a Hayden team could go to was the Rose, there were no other B10 ties for Jan.

I'm not saying that one is better than the other, it's apple and oranges. Both built our program from bare closets, but when hayden was here there was nothing to start with. He built or made it get built(he threated to quit over facilities).

last bit about getting blown out by the pac10 champ in the rose. How has Kirk and Co done vs pac10 teams in bowl games or when we were the away team 0-3? in the one bowl game(02 Orange) USC blew us out in the second half. And in at AZ in 04? or ASU in 09 both to lesser teams one that didnt even go to a bowl game.

FYI the 80's were by far the best in Iowa history for all Iowa sports, that points to the man in charge, Bump Elliot(sp)who he hired and that board of regents vs Barta/SM and the current out of touch,PC joke of a board we have now.

There have been four great eras in Iowa football:

1. Howard Jones: 1920-22: 20 straight wins and 2 Big Ten titles 20W 2L
2. Forest Evashevski 1956-60: 3 Big Ten titles; 2 Rose Bowl wins; 37W 8L 2T
3. Hayden Fry: 1981-90: 3 Big Ten titles; 3 Rose Bowls; 81W 36L 4T
4. Kirk Ferentz: 2001-2010: 2 Big Ten titles; 2 Orange Bowls (one win); 85W 41L

Which era was the best? I would argue they were all great.

Let's hope for another great stretch of Iowa football....

Funny that you mentioned "apples and oranges" in the stanza directly before that.

That would be about the only area you can compare the two. Iowa's "away" record vs P10 teams is pretty bad over the last 30+ years.

The '02 Orange Bowl is the only apples-to-apples comparison. You can't compare regular-season games to the Rose Bowl. Especially if you're calling something else "apples and oranges". That's ridiculous.

Kirk has gone 3-1 against the SEC against what you would call away games. He beat Florida, LSU & South Carolina in the heart of SEC country.

Funny, there isn't much difference in distance between Seattle & Pasadena and Iowa City & Tampa. Not even 200 miles. It is over eleven hundred miles from Seattle to Pasadena.
