Ferentz not the most overpaid University Employee (by a long shot).

So, your response is "I have no idea what a university president does." Thanks for playing.

I don't really either. But I'm not a buffoon on the internet about it.

Whatever it is, I'll bet it is a helluva lot less than the President of the United States does and that gentleman only makes $400k. Of course, he didn't speak a truism about sexual assault and then backpedal with a hard hitting press release full of accomplishments like

Shortly after I became president of the University of Iowa, I mandated training for every employee– and in 2013 we achieved 100% compliance. We began this in 2008 – six years before the federal government required all universities to do so.
...
In 2009, I created a coordinator position that reports directly to me and is charged with assuring that all departments of the university are working together to address the issue. We were one of the first universities to have such a position. We are also one of a small handful of universities to be consistently recognized by the US Department of Justice as a national model for our efforts.

Oh, and I've got another one, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education celebrated her ascendancy to the throne by naming Iowa's speech code the speech code of the month in August of 2007. It has allegedly since been amended, but still contains the constitutionally objectionable provisions: http://www.thefire.org/speech-code-of-the-month-university-of-iowa/

I never said I didn't know what she does...I said I was only aware of a few accomplishments. My point was that I have a hard time believing there are a bunch of Ivy League schools (or higher paying schools) lining up waiting for her to become available...so the 5 year retention bonus makes no sense to me at the tune $100K per year. I'm sure Harvard and Yale are beating each other down to get to the KU graduate. The University has made huge strides in her tenure...peaking with an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel last year. I'm so proud of the perception her leadership has created for the University.

Barta gets a ton of crap for KF's contract, some warranted, but paying a 100% of annual salary as a staying on bonus is a bit much when I don't think the Academia is burning a path to her door.

You keep saying it. Over and over and over.

Ok, I'm going to write Sally and see if I can do a ride along to get a better feel for what she does on a day to day basis. Maybe you could send me all the glowing reports of the job she is doing and all the Ivy League Schools and top Liberal Arts schools lining up to sign her to a big contract...therefore justifying the stay on bonus. I'm sure the SEC resume is going to play very well with them.

And I'm also sure her husband was the most qualified person for the job at the University too. Where is 60 Minutes when you need them? They could hit the party school angle too. Sounds like an opportunity for some quality journalism...maybe we could go to Northwestern to find a qualified student to investigate.

A retention bonus, for what , breathing????

C'mon the regents are morons to have this in her contract.

Sally M has probably done an average to slightly above average job. I have read she has a big focus on student diversity and has increased foreign student admissions

But the UI is not and has not been making its way up the academic ratings ladder has it ??? over the last bunch of years?

I remember the Des MOines school district giving supt Sebring a big retention bonus every time she took a sniff at at another district. And what did that give them but her getting fired for the messy email sex scandal.

Very, very few people in these top paying jobs are worth giving a bonus.

I think she got a retention bonus and her normal pay is more in line with $500k. But still, the whole administrative regime of these schools is bloated all to hell. It ain't far off from what has happened to hospitals. Sure, direct costs of actually providing the service go up every year, but when you get Uncle Sugar and the state government kicking in a huge percentage of the bill, you see a bunch of grifters roll in and create a bunch of ways to siphon value out.

Hospitals are an easy target, but the reality is it is an incredibly complex industry at the apex of where the public, private, and non profits sectors intersect. Plus it has outrageous regulation, huge employer in every region, delivery challenges, and on and on and on. Knock down the salaries of leadership, and if you think healthcare is a mess now, take the talent out and we're hosed.

I think the president of the UI, a world class institution, demands a $500k salary with reasonable incentives.

This is not an endorsement of Sally, but the position.

Interesting thread...

Just want to weigh in on this overused definition for the UI.

One of the criterias/factors for the Princeton Review party school rankings is alcohol/drug related arrests per capita. The fact that IC/Coralville actually enforce the public intoxication/PAULA/DUI laws actually count against the UI reputation. Ironically, if the cops would turn the other way when a group of inebriated students are stumbling down the sidewalks, our ranking would slip downward.

I dont have a problem with that yearly salary either. I am just dont think a $500,000 retention bonus is needed.

To me anything less than 9 wins this year could quite honestly be blamed on Ken O'Keefe. I'm not sure what his salary was, and also not quite sure what he did.

Well...the regents didn't pony up for the last two UI presidents...so it figures...now that we have lost two good ones...they will open up the wallet to pay the mediocre one.

Sally Mason is not worth that much money...frankly I don't understand why they are paying her that...didn't the Regents just give her a vote of no confidence last year or the year before? She needs to go, first she ruins tailgating...then she gets her husband a cushy job based on her position...that's just crooked...I don't care what people think of her.

Regardless though...the higher ed bubble will burst eventually...it's unsustainable...

"Excuse me sir, but if I kill all the golfers, they are going to lock me up and throw away the keys." "Not golfers, gophers!" "I can do that, I don't even need a license".

So, your logic is that the reputation is unwarranted and it's actually a law enforcement issue. Interesting take. I'm not completely dismissing your argument as I spent a night in the Iowa City jail because an overzealous police officer thought I was involved in a fight outside the field house. I just happened to walk out of another establishment and got caught in the melee of bodies. There wasn't a lot of dialogue about the circumstances, so I have a beef still with the men in blue in IC. That being said, I've been to a lot of games across the country at SEC stadiums, PAC 12 stadiums, etc, and I still think the level of drunkedness at a Hawk game is at another level and that's saying something as I go to the Georgia / Florida game every year. Thats the only game on par.
