Ferentz : Iowa-Nebraska Black Friday game coming back

Wisconsin is the rival we want. We get a competitive series with them...and it means something. I really think we have to assess where the Nebraska program is right now and determine if it makes sense to play them anymore on Black Friday. When you have taken 4 of 5 with three absolute beat downs...you just have to call it like it is. They are not on our level and don't warrant the Black Friday game.

Lol, I got your joke.

Its funny how much things have changed from when Pelini was fired. Now Nebraska is begging to get Iowa back as a Black Friday opponent.

@InGoodCo Where you at? A little help here?

Sorry, it's my off season too :) - but yeah, I love Iowa vs Nebraska on that Black Friday cause I live in Omaha. I also love that all Nebraska media does is talk about Iowa but then out of the other corner of their mouth they say "they're not our rivals". I love that it's the last taste in their mouths every year. I love that it's getting their coaches routinely fired immediately after playing Iowa. I also love that Nebraska's previous AD pretty much f'd them out of this day and game and now Iowa is helping them get out of their own mess. Their own tradition! Iowa accommodated Nebraska for that day, then they wanted to be off it. Wonder why? Could it be the fact that their previous coach and even with their new coach, they are not going to be considered a "physical" team, which really plays to Iowa's advantage later in the season IMO (at least under our current regime). Nebraska wanted Iowa off of Black Friday because it was becoming clear that Iowa would more times then not, take advantage of a beaten up, worn down Nebraska, who run a gimmick system (still are) that isn't going to beat many of the Midwest bully type teams in late November. I think Iowa will continue to dominate this series especially if it remains at the end of the year. I love it! I also love lamp.

They run the spread option so we will be thoroughly familiar with it when we play. Northwestern, Iowa State, etc. Linebackers should have good discipline by end of season for sure. Also will be lots and lots of Scotty's game tape to watch to understand any nuances. Only thing better would be if it were the day before Thanksgiving so it could crap on their turkey!

I think who you want to see play on Black Friday depends on where you live in the state. I live in eastern Iowa. I'd like to always see Wisconsin/Iowa in that last game. That game has meant more the past 5-6 years than playing Nebraska. I still think of Nebraska as a Big 8/12 team that is not yet ready for the big boy league. Wisconsin/Iowa is Big 10 football at it's best.

it wasn't last year, it was a joke

Watching the pucker factor among the Lincoln faithful as their highly toted recruits get their rears lit up is way too much fun to pass up on.

The nerve of a 6-6 program like Nebraska’s to think they belong on the same field as Iowa’s 7-5 program.

Nebraska was 4-8 last year by the way. Iowa has outscored them 96-24 the past two years. That tells me they don't belong on the field with Iowa. Say Iowa is mediocre if you want...but that puts Nebraska where? A steaming crap pile?

You can point to the recent records, but I'll say a few things...it matters the way the games are played. When we lose to Penn State (last play of the game) or MSU last year, those were tight physical contests where big plays made the difference...or turnovers in the red zone made the difference. We blew out a #6 rated team also last year.

Let me put something up here for the Big Red 2017 results:

Oct. 7, 2017 #9 Wisconsin Home Loss 38-17 Details
Oct. 14, 2017 #9 Ohio State Home Loss 56-14 Details
Oct. 28, 2017 Purdue Away Win 25-24 Details
Nov. 4, 2017 Northwestern Home Loss 31-24 Details
Nov. 11, 2017 Minnesota Away Loss 54-21 Details
Nov. 18, 2017 #13 Penn State Away Loss 56-44 Details
Nov. 24, 2017 Iowa Home Loss 56-14 Details

Nebraska gave up an average of 55 points in their last three games...Ohio State hasn't punted against Nebraska in 6 years.

No...recent history tells you they don't belong on the field with Iowa.

Keep dreaming.

We are not on Wisconsin's level any more than Nebby is on ours.

2013 L 28-9
2014 L 26-24
2015 W 10-6
2016 L 17-9
2017 L 38-14

So they've taken 4 of 5, w/ 2 beat downs, w/ the Hawks topping 14 points exactly once (and of course those 14 points last year were scored by JJ, not by the offense).

Better to keep the "rival" to the West. If there are beat downs involved, it's better to be the beater than the beatee.

I do want to play Wisconsin every year, but I am a bit leery of making it the end of year rivalry game.

Frankly, I think Wisconsin should get a rotation of home-at-home's against Iowa, Nebraska, and Northwestern to end the their season. That would mean Iowa occasionally gets Minnesota as a closing game. (While Nebraska plays Wisconsin)

Oh, so you think the 2013 game was a blowout? It was 14-9 Wisconsin with 7 minutes left in the game. Your argument loses all credibility right there. We couldn't score in the red zone...that was a close freaking game. Comparing those four games to what Nebraska has done against the top competition is non sensical. We are a hell of alot closer to Wisconsin than Nebraska is to us. Nebraska has been bitch slapped by the top tier teams for years...we beat them at home.

Last year was the only game we got molested in the past five. Any one of the other four could have gone either way with one big play. It's been a better game, despite us losing, and if we want to compete for the West title every year...beating Wisconsin is necessary...let's do it on a special day.

I had forgotten they lost that bad to Minny. That's pretty funny. Mike Reilly was the best thing that ever happened for teams that played Nebraska.

I can’t stand Nebraska. If we beat them by over one hundred points a game for the next ten years I still wouldn’t be satisfied, and yes your right I am frustrated with what seems like Groundhog Day in mediocrity. Why can’t we just change things up and try something different? It just seems that Kirk is happy with 7-5 and maintaining that level. Maybe the new addition of extra coaches will help. I just can’t get excited about a 7-5 average over his 18 year average. This from a person the long timers on this forum know that I totally supported and defended him for many years.

Simple things like calling passing audibles on offense. Surely Kirk knows this is the right thing to do to keep the opponents defense off balance. This looks like a coach that has got an attitude of “I am doing it my way and “eff you” if you don’t like it.” “I have coaching tenure here and no one can do anything about it.”

Five more years of that and I will readily agree with you but we are not quite there yet in my opinion. Their program is struggling right now but the new coach could totally change that. Right now I think we should keep a close eye on what is going on in Ames. They finally figured it out that if a coach show promise maybe they should pay to keep him around. I do believe and agree with this philosophy but I think Barta is just a little over the top.

If I remember correctly the crew calling the Ohio St. game made comments like ( are you sure we're watching Iowa? ) They were shocked we were passing on first down so much. We all know KF is bull headed and BF just can't blow everything up all at once. Hopefully we'll see some changes this season also. Stanley has his rookie season out of the way and should be able to handle a lot more. I'll just keep on hoping it'll change.

I loved the Ohio State game. My thoughts were “Where has this been all this time?” The Ohio State game is what I was hoping Brian would bring to the table on a consistent basis. Then we played Purdue and it was back to ground zero.

The Purdue game is one the coaches need to watch over and over just to keep reminding them DON'T DO THAT AGAIN! Somebody needs to steal the headset from KF just before the game.
