Feels like the Ferentz era has come full circle

The biggest problems of fan malcontent this year are the losses to two terrible teams in MN and ISU and a putrid offense during the NE game. I think most fans feel we were out-coached in those games.

I will accept the fact that ISU beat a darn good OK St. team, so anyone could argue that ISU is not a bad team. But......

Yes, ISU isn't terrible, but can anyone argue that beating them and Minnesota means we would have been a better team than we are now?

This argument easily can go the other way: was Iowa a better team for having not lost to UNI in such a miraculous fashion?

Wins are always better than losses.

Were they better because they beat UNI? No. They should have pummeled UNI, but they knew he was kicking them low and that with pressure they could block it.

Sure we would all have felt better had we beaten two of our biggest rivals, but to me at least, the embarrassing defeats to MSU and Nebraska to end the season would have sucked just as bad were we 9-3 as they do now. The criticism of KF wouldn't have been toned down with that record either. I don't sleep well the night after a loss anyway.

I've been reading about the career arc of Pat Hill at Fresno State recently, he is like the Ferentz of Fresno.

Iowa State has a more talented team this year then Iowa. To consider a team a "bad loss" when they are ranked 16 spots higher in the BCS than Iowa is just a lack of knowledge.

6-3 in Bowls
2 Big Ten Titles
2 BCS appearances
1 BCS win
99-65 record

Just a hell of a lot to be sad about, don't we?

In this era of football, how many of those 99 wins are against legitimate opponents. Before you go falling all over yourself. 13 years of about 2 cupcake opponents half of which are in Div IAA turns out to be quite a lot. And some of those he lost or almost lost.

Good try.

Besides the Minnesota loss, the other losses aren't bad losses. ISU is better this year. PSU and Nebraska have better teams especially when playing on the road. Michigan State is better then Iowa and they couldn't afford to turn it over and win.

This is exactly where most expected Iowa to be this year, 4th in the division and around 7-8 wins. I think it was Jon who pointed it out, that people have carried over their dissapointment about last years team to this years team. This year's team is exactly where people expected them to be based on what they lost and what was coming back. So I dont understand why people think this year was so bad.

It comes down to the fact that we keep losing to teams we shouldn't be losing to. MSU and Nebraska have equal or greater talent. Minnesota and ISU do not (although they have a lot more emotion than Iowa does, and that's apparently enough to beat Iowa).

Get out of here with that crap. EVERY team schedules cream puffs....or haven't you seen an SEC schedule? Over 48 OOC games in 13 years, the Hawks have played SIX D-1AA teams, and a couple of those were thanks to Missouri backing out of a home and home with us at the last minute. You're going to have to try harder than that to find a good argument.

That makes it sound like we never stopped losing to them. We've only lost 5 games since the beginning of 2008 to teams that we should have beaten by double digits.

2011-Minnesota and ISU
2010-Minnesota and NW
2008-Illinois

I'll give them a pass on the 2009 NW game because we lost Ricky. Those losses are disappointing, but I'm not ready to push the panic button just yet.

Srsly? In 2008, LSU went 8-5 (3-5 SEC). They were in Les Miles 4th year.

Should I bold "SEC" for you? He went 8-5 with all 5 losses coming in the SEC. You know... the conference that has won 5 championships in a row, 7 of 13 BCS championships and are about to be guaranteed their 6th in a row. You might want to pick a coach from another conference if you're going to point to them having a down year. What do you expect? It's pretty impressive that anyone in the SEC could go undefeated let alone stay on top. The SEC is 7-0 in BCS title games and a win this year gives them 57% of the BCS championships. The only reason they're going to have a loss in the loss column is because LSU and Alabama will probably play each other.

I get where you're going by pointing out that the coach of the #1 team in the country was 8-5 in his 4th year. I'm just pointing out that the SEC is generally considered the best conference and all of his losses came in the SEC. That's a little different than needing a couple of blocks to beat UNI(FCS) and needing to outscore Pittsburgh(5-6, Big East) 28-3 when you're in your 10th+ season. Not to mention, Les Miles had won a championship in his third season. The closest Ferentz came to a championship involved blowing a 24-7 half time lead to the fighting Seneca Wallace's. After going into the half with 7 points, Wallace came out and scored 29 to give Iowa State a 36-31 win. Literally lost to one player that was playing on a team that finished the season 7-7. That was Ferentz's only loss in a 11-1 season.

Sorry, I just disagree with the Ferentz/Miles comparison.
