Fallout at Pitt

I know Homer started a thread yesterday, but espn is reporting they have had 10 decommits so far. "Needless to say, with players decommitting left and right (as many as 10 may have dropped the Panthers), Pederson has to get this done ASAP."

From reading the ESPN Insider page, the only player I see that has dropped Pitt and had an Iowa offer was LB Quinton Alston. It says he is now considering Purdue, Louisville and Cincinnati. In other news, I didn't know if it was already posted but the highly regarded RB Jameel Poteat, who was commited to Pitt and had an Iowa offer, switched his commitment to Cincinnati.

Yeah, I'm surprised that this hasn't gotten more talk as they are on Iowa's schedule next year. I guess the Big 10's 0-for-2011 overwhelmed it.

At this point Pitt is likely looking at a lost season next year. Nothing is guaranteed, but asking a coach to take over a team in February (hard to see how this gets done before then), hire a staff, re-recruit existing players, implement a system, and then travel to Kinnick in September and try to win a game is a big challenge. With Wannstedt at the helm, I had that game down as a tossup. With the yet-to-be-determined late hire leading the troops, I really like our chances. I think the game at Iowa State is now without question our toughest nonconference game (and potentially one of the 3-4 toughest games of the season).

That said, this could be a good thing for Pitt as it sounds like they dodged a bullet with Haywood (completely mystifying hire). However, that assumes Pederson will find somebody good, which I really doubt. They look like they're about to enter the equivalent of Iowa's post-Tom Davis era. Enjoy it, Pitt fans.

Edit: I now see the speculation that RichRod would be a candidate if he is indeed fired. If he tries to run a spread with those players (which of course he will), they might not win a game next year. Awesome.

I'll take a contrarian view on whether Iowa will pick up any de-commits who had Iowa as a finalist before picking Pitt. In most cases where you are down to A or B and choose A, in your mind you've closed the door to B. In this case, if Iowa is B, the Iowa coaches likely close the door, too, and move on and find another prospect to fill that scholarship. Not to say the door cannot be re-opened, it's just not as simple from going from B to A then back to B again.

I agree was thinking more along the lines of someone new. Now that Iowa knows where it stands in this class

Other than the ISU game being on the road the non-con does set up pretty nicely. Also, ISU is rebuilding on offense, it will probably take 3 or 4 games to get herman's offense to function the way they want with any consistency, by then the Iowa game will be over.

4-0 in the non-con seems very realistic, but let's see how it plays out with players returning, injuries, suspension, etc.
