Fake Field Goal

I was delighted to see the fake field goal. Funny to see the fans in Kinnick have the same reaction that I had on my couch in North Carolina. The fans stood up and cheered. Not unlike that first play of Hayden Fry's tenure when the team came out in a spread formation.

I want to give a shout out to Marshall Koehn too. The kid showed a lot of nads. First he juked a defender and broke it outside. Then he threw himself into the tacklers and reached for the first down. He showed a lot of guts. No doubt this got everyone going. I loved it for so many reasons. I was not surprised to see him go back out there after that an nail the field goal.

On Iowa!

I too loved that fake, I just wished they had saved it for next week when they are inevitably going to be down 10-7 in the 3rd quarter.

His Bio shows that he played DB and WR in HS. He's not the typical delicate 1 dimentional kicker

Wow, I disagree with trying the Fake, here.
I'd rather see Marshall knock thru the Long FG there.
Suppose I can see where short-sighted fans liked the exotic play.......
but, I wish they'd saved it for a BigTen game.

Kudos to Marshall! He'll see that on film and I think he may realize that cutting it back, and staying tucked behind the lineman, may have possibly allowed him to make a 1st down.

What I found interesting was the pooch kick by ISU. Imagine if they had managed to bounce it off of a Hawkeye first. I think KF should put that one in the pocket for future use.

Just a fun game to watch overall, so glad they didn't struggle like Michigan did :)

Short sighted? Doing it the first week in a game you're probably going to dominate was brilliant. It was what...4th and 12 or something? I never thought I'd see iowa try something like that. Now iowa state has to prepare for it and will always have it in the back of their heads on saturday. It's a win win in a game like that.

Bottom line - it was great seeing ferentz doing something non predictable for once in his tenure. Same with the screen play before halftime rather than just downing it and running out the clock. Maybe you're the one being short sighted?

Did you see the Michigan game? Utah was the reason they struggled.

I don't expect we will ever see it again.

I liked it....too bad they couldn't convert it. Pat on the back of KF for giving it a try.

Doing it in this game was a good idea. Field position was optimal. Maybe down & distance a little too long.

But here's what it does. Now every other opponent has to spend some practice time and more importantly, now it's stuck in the opposing coaches' brain that maybe, just maybe Kirk might do the unthinkable...

That's not been a concern before.

Yes, I watched the game. The point is Iowa struggled against good and bad competition last year. I had a hard time watching that game as it reminded me of Iowa last year. On the other hand Iowa didn't struggle against an FCS school yesterday. The fake field goal and the Redbird's pooch kick should both be learning experiences for the Hawks this year. Iowa was never in a position early last year to try anything like that and neither was Michigan Friday night.

They can still use in Big 10 play. It's not like you only get one for the season. Obviously you meant wanting to keep the element of surprise but I think KF wanted to do things to win over the fans.

I was happier to see them go for points to end the half.

Kirks been taking a knee in that spot for ever when the rest of the football world is trying to score.

The fake field goal in that game was cool but weird too. I kind of get the feeling we won't see it again unless it's a bowl.

I think they will go back and realize someone missed a block. I don't think they meant for the edge guy to go unblocked and leave it to our kicker to juke him...which he did, but it delayed his ability to get up field and forced him wider than he needed to be. There was a seam with blocking had they kicked that guy out and had him go more off the end rather than wide.

Great call...just not quite executed the way planned. I think it was Kreiger-Coble who hit the wrong guy.

The fake fg was actually predictable, and extremely conservative. The distance would have had the probability of a lower trajectory kick, so a blocked fg was taken out of the equation, and this was a defacto punt.

The more aggressive play call was going for it on 4th down in the red zone. That play I would have preferred taking the point, especially at that point of the game.

Iowa used a couple of different (what I thought were new) formations. Especially since Ill St was in cover two. I had thought a couple times they were in single cover, but they were pretty good at hiding the corner in cover two.

Biggest question I have on offense is were the receivers having trouble getting separation, or were down field throws not really part of the plan? The downfield blocking of the receivers was really, really good.

Anecdotal only, but I thought an entirely different body language from the players.

Hard to tell a lot form this game, and there were some fundamental mistakes. Missing outside leg on blocking assignments. Losing back shoulder contain. Some other things. Basically execution to use a word that drives a lot f Iowa fans nuts.

"Taking the points" is one of the dumbest phrases in football. You don't go to the ref and say "give us 3 points" you attempt a field goal. Maybe you make it and maybe you don't, but you don't get handed an automatic 3 points.

It was smart to do this early... Make other teams prepare for it, it will be in the back of their heads and could save a few from getting blocked this year.

Yep. It's the same reason you throw deep early in the game. You keep the defense honest. For years we've heard other teams say (sometimes in a snarky tone) that it's not hard to prepare for IOWA, they're very predictable. It's about time KFz did something about that.

Agree (although, I also wonder if staff was saying they didn't think Marshall could hit a 50-something-yard FG), and as someone mentioned the Illinois State pooch kick above, THAT could also be worked in. How nice would it be to be able to put a team at their own 5 or 10 and have nobody back to return a kick?

It really does (potentially) open up some possibilities.
