Fair weather fan on the morning radio.

With fans like Jon Miller who needs fans. Every morning I have to listen to how terrible this Iowa basketball team is. Just because Jon can’t make any money on a basketball team rebuilding don’t be a hater. I suppose Northwestern is not bound for the NCAA and isn’t a good win. I think Northwestern will be in the top 100 so that stat can be adjusted from todays radio commentary. I will make it my mission to make sure when Iowa is a top 7 seed year after year in the NCAA tourney to remind Jon Miller that he gave up, wrote off and failed The University of Iowa when they were down. Jon is a fair weather Cub fan, fair weather Hawkeye basketball fan and proving to me that you are not a true Hawkeye fan (for better or worse). I wish I could simply turn on and off when I am a fan when things are not going so great or in Jon Millers case when he isn’t making big money off the team. I can’t wait to hear how you spin this victory to not mean anything tomorrow morning! Maybe Miller will waste another day on the radio talking about hypothetical situations like a Florida coach is leaving when he has not. Just another Iron clad prediction that Jon bet on that did not happen. Why can't there be a local sports radio show on another channel?

Fans like Jon Miller...OH you mean objective fans, the ones who don't pretend to see things that aren't there.

We aren't a 500 team right now, saying this team isn't very good isn't unreasonable given our record.

We're getting better, but these "told ya so" posts after every win just make people look stupid.

Nice first post, BTW.

Hate to say it but I have to agree on the fair weather basketball fan comment and while I can handle and respect Steve's love for his Maize and Gold, I find his lovefest with the Cyclone Nation to be a bit over the top as when he was a fresh face in the market he played the Hawk/Clone rivalry pretty much down the middle. Once he got involved with the Cyclone Nation website he became a "CLONE FAN".

I have always enjoyed Jon's radio shows but have switched over to Mike and Mike for my morning commute and since the station dial is set when I get in the car for the ride home I find myself listening to the Mouth of the Midwest each afternoon. Always enjoyed Marty and Miller in the afternoon but don't really enjoy the show since Matt arrived. We'll see what happens, but right now I think 1700 is making strides in the market. They have better coverage of the area due to FCC regulations on signal strength after dark. The main question is how does the Citadel bankruptcy affect 1700 in the future.

I may come back once Jon and Steve start talking college football again but I just can't handle the current basketball discussions. I have been a Hawkeye fan for well over 40 years and will remain so through thick and thin.

Give me some evidence of them being "fair weather" fans? What did they say that makes them "fair weather". Or is that just the trendy thing to say?

We haven't been very good this year, so they talk about why we haven't been very good this year. Thats being objective and reasonable, not this "fair weather" crap that people pretend.

And nobody forces you to listen.

We are going lost 20 games not win 20, Iowa has never ever ever lost 20 games before.

Todd has taken us to the next level yeah rock bottom!

He wants to get rid of the coach on the radio. He is lazy these days picking on the easy things like the crowd. No excuses, but I have only made it two games. Have you driven on the roads to IC this year...THEY SUCK? Anyway he talks about the crowd and beats the easy targets like a dead horse. Can we talk about the recruits coming in???? Can we talk about the improvement from year one to year three? Can we discuss how May and Fuller are improving? Can we talk about how Alford broke the attendance sellout string not Todd. The fans have been talking for 7 years. Alford left this team with nothing much. His recruits were not coachable for the most part. That is why we peaked year after year in December (minus the tourney ;) ). Now for the 3rd straight year we get better at the end of the year. John is just a bully that is forgetting how to break down a team not winning. He does the same crap during baseball season. Cubs winning Jon breaking it down. Cubs losing the Royals are his team and "they suck so I must be a true fan" give me a break. I like when Jon is breaking things down giving stats, but I think he is in a run needs a vacation because he is mailing it in lately.

Northwestern will win over 20. Jon said that they will not make the NCAA. They still get to play 5 games against teams with a lower rank than them. Plus they get at least one game in the tourney.

I am guessing your radio has a button that allows you to change the channel. It might be best for you.

And you absolutely are taking the 'making money' comments I made today totally out of context, because when I talked about businesses that have lost money due to the downturn of Iowa basketball, I explicitly said that while it would be better for our income potential (ad sales) for more traffic during basketball season, which is a loss of opportunity, it's not as big of a deal to me as it is to other people.

It was a discussion about how much this state used to be a basketball crazy state, and how the downturn of Iowa and Iowa State have negatively impacted some businesses in the state.

if you want to pretend like things are all fine and great, then the radio show may not be for you, and some of the things I write may not be for you.

And I hope they do turn it around and become seeded again in the tournament. Just because I am not going to sit here and tickle your bottom with a feather when Iowa is in the midst of its worst three year run in program history, that makes me a hater.

Mmmm,...okay.

Penn State will win over 20. Jon said that they will not make the NCAA. They still get to play 5 games against teams with a lower rank than them. Plus they get at least one game in the tourney.

Slow down Cubbie, and take a breath. No one said Penn State would have anything to do with the NCAA tournament. You mean NW...and no, they will not make the tournament unless they win the Big Ten Tournament.

He wants to get rid of the coach on the radio.

You are not telling the truth. I have never said Iowa needs to get rid of Todd. I have said that I want things to work for him at Iowa, because I dont want the program to go through another change. I have said that the way things have looked in the nearly three years he has been at Iowa, it's not promising. I have said that I think he will get year four. As for the Alford breaking the attendance string (I think I can translate for you here), I have gone over that ad nauseum. But Lickliter is nearly through his third year. The 'Blame Alford' stuff has tired out even for me.

If you are going to listen and get upset about things you think you are hearing, listen a little closer so that you can accurately complain about what is actually being said. I give opinions for a living...and I am a big boy and when I am wrong about something, I quickly say it. Goes with the territory, and I have no problems admitting that

But not with people that make stuff up that was not said. I realize that is also going to happen every day, because I see it every day. At least when it takes place here in my house, I get to point out where you are off base and dead wrong.

The crowd has been a huge disappointment this year, thats a story its self. Have we improved since year one? Or will we be staying home watching the tournament(s) in March again? Theres only so much positive to talk about regarding this season. You don't have to listen to him, but he's being realistic, like it or not.

OK it is a bet. Northwestern will go to the tourney with just ONE Big Ten tourney win. By the way I like your passive aggressive response. It is just like the radio station. I don't switch the station because 1/2 the time Steve talks, and he make really good points that don't revolve around analogies. He will break things down with 2 or 3 points to back up his claim. Penn State was a typing mistake...actually I was watching the post game on BTN and they were talking about Penn State...LOL :)

OK it is a bet. Northwestern will go to the tourney with just ONE Big Ten tourney win. JDM: You're on. You do know they have never, ever been to the tournament, and the resume they are 'building' this year is going to be the year they break in? Not gonna happen.

Posts like this, and over the top negative posts (which I have been a part of), are why the healing process related to the fan base and the basketball program is going to be a three or four year affair.

Cubbie,

As for your comment about the fans.

I spent the day at a meeting where I met up with 4 old friends. We all had season tickets for years and got to know each other at the games. All of us quit buying season tickets shortly after the Pierce incident.

We spent the lunch hour reminising about special games/players in Iowa basketball history and how much we all missed attending all the games. Each of us has started going to a few games again. The "haters" on here can talk all they want about the won/loss record, boring basketball, etc. but the discussion we had today centered around how it is great to see this team playing hard and trying to execute what the coach wants accomplished. Those are the qualities that will turn this program around. Basketball is a team game and we seeing a group of players come together as a team. It has showed the past several weeks but all some people want to look at is the record and the attendance. If this team continues to improve the wins will come and the attendance will improve.

At the end of the day what matters? Playing hard, or your record? Its the W/L column.

I give them credit for playing hard, but thats not what Lick is judged on. Especially in year three.

Their getting close though, I'll give em that. I think we really need to take a giant step forward next year, just to put a band aid on the attendance issue.

I hate the term fair weather fans. The bottomline is that most everyone visiting this site are Hawkeye Fans and in the end wish for the same result. Wins. It hasn't exactly been the greatest 3 years. This season overall results will in the end be judged negatively.
As we move forward we can only hope that we are seeing the light.

Lion and Cubbie:

last year at the end of the season even as the team lost 10 of 13 I was encouraged and really looking forward to this season. I could see the pieces coming together

All of that changed when Peterson and Kelly left. Right away I knew this could be one of the worst seasons of my life. It has been. And it has been brutal to watch at times. I do respect and appreciate how hard the kids work and have written on that and have said that repeatedly. At times I can see the faint outlines of some design but they have been short lived and amidst press conferences where coach has said his son should have played more rapier in the year only to see John play a combined 15 minutes the last three games. That's about right IMO and I also don't think it can be a coincidence

I don't know any fans that want to go through this. And some don't share the same optimism you do. I understand that when you are a optimistic as you are and others don't see the world the way you do, that gets frustrating

At the end of the day all hawk fans want to win again. Some may just disagree on how quickly that will happen

"Just because I am not going to sit here and tickle your bottom with a feather when Iowa is in the midst of its worst three year run in program history, that makes me a hater." -Miller

That is one of the funnier things I've read on here in a long time. Love it!

If Iowa starts winning, the economy improves, the weather improves, people will come. Oh yes, people will come.
