Facebooking Recruits

Look, I've facebook friended a lot of random high schoolers, but they were mostly hot girls. Adding football recruits is just creepy though.

Maybe I don't understand social networking. I was always under the impression that networking is based on relationships. Whether its a professional, personal, social, etc. You depend on others in networking, others depend of you.

In professional networking I go to conferences, workshops, trainings, etc to meet other people in my profession and to get better at my job and open up other possible doors in my profession. I can't speak for other professions but I'm guessing most have similar situations as far as networking goes.

In social networking, I try to meet new people through existing friends in order to expand my circle of friends and maybe even aid in my professional networking. I have introduced my friends to others as well in order from them to expand their social circles.

My point here is networking is give and take. Several people benefit or grow professional or expand their social circles.

Becoming facebook "friends" with someone who plays football for Iowa is not a two way street. They don't know you, have never met you, nor will they probably make an attempt to meet you. They have their own personal and professional lives to worry about. You get a little look into their personal lives but in no way know them like their real friends.

To you maybe social networking is following other people's lives. In my mind social networking is actually networking in which some sort of relatonship is there.

This is no different than the guys who claimed to have a "hot girlfriend that he met on the internet but is in Hawaii for the school year."

Xerxes, I have to say I agree totally. Now I don't have facebook for my profession, but I understand using it for that reason or to keep in touch with other real friends that you know and have met. But I cannot understand the friending of random high school athletes.
I thought this was going to be a pretty hot topic, so this will
serve as my little bump as well.

I don't friend recruits. But that is more about just not being interested than anything else. That being said, our modes of communication and connection have changed social interaction so dramatically that you just really cannot apply old standards.

It is a bit like bemoaning the fact that we don't sit down in front of the TV to watch one of three networks put their spin on the day's events.

Facebook has allowed us to radically increase our circle of latent friends. It used to be that your latent friends were only people to whom you were connected through physical contact with another. Now, you can have a latent friend across the world.

However, Facebook is most commonly used as an alternate mode of connection with people who one already knows offline. It is actually used as a way to increase social connection with face-to-face friends, not decrease social connection.

This being said, as part of an older generation, I have a tendency to use FB really more as a phone and address book than anything else. That being said, I don't have a problem with anyone using it differently.

Last thing, I wouldn't worry about one or two Hawkeyes befriending and posting to recruits. If the comments or actions of a couple people on FB is going to turn them off about coming to Iowa, then they are not going to be able to deal with our fishbowl.

This is awesome. :D I'm in my 20's and I think I'm too old for facebook. Anybody remember MySpace? Ya that's facebook in 3 years, so if your reading this and on facebook its time to get out ahead of the herd and look for the next stream cuz this one is drying up fast.

MySpace never had the numbers that Facebook has. Because of that, MySpace was more susceptible to market fluctuations. In contrast, Facebook can endure the fluctuations a bit better ... it contends with more with the equivalent of market "thermodynamics."

Anyhow, Facebook will certainly have to work hard to keep at the forefront of the game ... however, many folks asserted that Google would have faced a quick death too ... that hasn't exactly happened. The key is for a company, once it gets big and owns a large chunk of the market, is to keep itself at the forefront ... and possibly be the ones who DEFINE what the forefront "is" ... furthermore, in the face of possible future catastrophe, they'll also have to be willing and able to reinvent themselves too (much like GE and INTEL).

Going off of how Facebook has been managed thus far ... I anticipate that Facebook is perfectly capable of being like Google and sticking around.

folks...go read cooper's facebook wall. Then click on the guy's profile that keeps posting stupid messages & "likes" on his page. It shows he lives in Cedar Rapids. I recommend someone stopping in to his place of business & calling him out on this creepy stalking. How would it be any different than what he is doing. What a complete tool.

here is a good example of what facebooking recruits can lead to....

See this stuff and the guy continually posting on Cooper's wall is what is really bothering me. It is making Hawk fans (Or Miss St fans in the CJ Johnson case) look very pathetic. Especially because there is no way this guy with Cooper is a college kid. Even then it's still creepy. Someone somehow needs to put the kabosh on this.

So you're saying I should inbox the guy whose pics I linked? :D

case and point here is a cooper fbook status....

Darian Supa Cooper
im not trying be rude but dont ask me what my top schools are there are columns about it on my page answering the same questions a million times is old now

I am a college student......but this is absolutely ridiculous. There are iowa fans all over his page. I hope people know they are hurting the cause not helping. Early tonight I thought we had a great shot at the trifecta meaning Cooper, CK, and Lomax. Now I am really starting to wonder. I think if the coach at Dematha could decide he would have all 3 at IOWA, which is why i think he is pushing Cooper to make a decision, but I think we may slip with all the Iowa bandwagoning on Cooper

Somebody needs to explain to these people what kind of idiots they are.

I inboxed him. He told me that he is not doing anything wrong, but he is just "wishing him luck on his decision." He has since posted a few more times.

On the other hand, I got a vulgar private message from an Alabama fan last night calling me all kinds of names because I told people to stop flooding CyKo's wall with posts begging him to play for their school. Haha. What a loser!

That's the problem, he doesn't see anything wrong with it. Just like murderers and pedophiles don't think they are doing anything wrong (bit of an exaggeration on the connection there I know). Link him that post from fufred. It is just ridiculous that people don't understand it. How would you like hundreds of people you don't know saying good luck, we hope you come to X school. Sad.

My two cents on the topic of facebooking players/recruits or posting on their walls ... If you don't know them then don't friend them. In reference to the Hawk fan who keeps posting on Cooper's wall ... that is just wrong. Of course, I also wonder why some of these player accept friend requests from people they don't know.

Social networking is great vehicle to keep in touch with friends/family. I just find it odd to facebook with someone you don't know. And for God's sake, don't embarrass all of hawkeyenation by hounding some player or recruit and acting like you know them. I will cut some slack to college students or younger kids wanting to be facebook friends with current players. If you are out of college and trying to facebook players or recruits ... well ... that is just odd.
