On another board a poster started a thread asking folks if ISU going to a mid-major or lesser conference is good or bad for the State of Iowa or to ISU. Some interesting comments ensued, most of which think that no harm would come to the State or to ISU.

I have always been of a mind that what is bad for ISU is good for Iowa as far as sports is involved so if ISU moves to a mid-major, that would be great for Iowa.

Would ISUs academics be harmed? Probably not according to most people's opinions because most students choose a university based on academics.

Here is a thought. If the State Board of Regents truly want big time State research University, combine the two universities (if ISU has to drop to a mid major) into one major university and combine the research. Because Iowa already is part of the Big 10 and part of the Big 10 research community, combining both Iowa and ISU into one university would make Iowa a large research university and almost double the student population.

ISU would drop athletics and that would be a point of contention for a few years but eventually that would go away.

ahhhhh no?

I think there is a better chance of Upper Iowa being invited into the big 10

Well, there are folks who say that UNI and ISU are unconstitutional schools based on the Iowa constitution. But I don't think combining the three schools would save money in the long run. You still have full staffs at all the schools.

But, it is doubtful the Big XII will fold, as it is in the best interest of Texas that it doesn't.

Sure you would have full staffs at both schools, ISU just becomes a satellite of Iowa like in some of the other states. The State of Iowa would then have just one major research university, the University of Iowa -- like Minnesota, Nebraska, Missouri, OSU, and so on. ISU would remain the same, it would just drop it's athletics. Not talking about saving money as far as the University goes. The research money would just be combined with Iowa's research money. ISU would then merge with the Big 10 and their research under Iowa's research department. The money that would be saved would be sports but I wasn't talking about saving money. I was talking about making one major research University in the State under the Big 10. It would definitely enhance ISUs research and enhance the State of Iowa in general under the Big 10.

I didn't include UNI.

If Texas moves somewhere else, the Big 12 is dead in the water. The conference is dead. There will be no markets for the Big 12. There will be no money, no tv revenue, nothing for a revamped Big 12.

And no, ISU is not going to do away with sports. My idea is a good one for the State of Iowa though. The State is too small for two major universities. Combine the two and the State would have one VERY fine research university.

If UIU was added, that would open up the television market of Fayette. Maybe even Decorah, Waterloo, and maybe Dubuque. And we could maybe start recruiting Turkey Valley High School, which is a hotbed of talent.

As an ISU grad I would've loved to go to Iowa and have my degree read that. However, there are so many nuances at ISU that Iowa would have no idea how to handle. The agricultural school, farms and facilities, and the vet school. Doubt anyone would know how to handle that at Iowa as well as those at ISU. Also, Iowa would be more likely to shift funds from those areas when it was budget cut time. Final point on this is that employers of specific areas recognize the ISU or Iowa name on a degree and associate the education with that. A degree from Iowa in agriculture or electrical engineering might not look as pretty to an employer as it once did. I'm just saying it would never work.

Now that is damn funny, good times in Fayette.

This is the most unlikely scenario Ive heard so far....well done. I didnt think anything could top the idea of UNC and Duke joining the Big Ten but this did it
