Existing WRs adding support

With all of the talk of Martin and some of the other recruits that are being targeted where do we go to develop our current wide receivers. I know Scheel and Smith were a bust for most people this year and Smith really seemed to regress and at times seemed lost. I can't remember a positive play by Scheel all year.

Coming in as freshmen as well as the beginning of this year these guys had some hype and I think have some athletic ability. Is Martin already better than these guys? Nash got some early PT and disappeared, is Parker going to be available? I know a lot of heat is targeted at Davis and the head scratching play calls but what about receiver coach or what other support can Cap'n Kirk bring in to help develop these guys? Unfortunately Iowa doesn't have a long list of Alumni they could call in to coach wide receivers with next level experience
 
Yeah, the Development of our Receivers has been an issue the last few years. Going back to Tevaun Smith, I'm not sure if he regressed his last season or was underutilized?

I always thought highly of WR Coach Erik Campbell, and wish he hadn't left. The current doofus at WR coach hasn't done much of any to progress the group.
 
I wouldn't be surprised if next year you see a lot of two TE sets in order to get an additional receiving threat out there. Fant, Hockenson, and Shaun Beyer are all very capable receivers. I've said it over and over again, but they need to do what the Patriots do. When Gronk was healthy they had plenty of formations with both Gronk and Martellus Bennett on the field. It's kind of a no brained putting two mismatches out there.
 
I wish I knew enough about the passing game scheme that Iowa (Davis) runs to determine if that is, in fact, the single biggest problem we have in that phase. I am simply not knowledgeable enough to make that decision.

Maybe a combination of QB, receivers, and predictability would be part of the answer. But, Davis has had 3 different QB's and multiple receivers over the past 5 years, including an opportunity to recruit receiver numbers at a much higher than normal level. And, the passing game has been an abject failure by most metrics.

I am left with the opinion that his scheme, which obviously worked well at Texas, is in fact a failure for whatever reason, at Iowa. And I don't want to hear the sorry excuse that it all falls back on KF. Davis is the offensive coordinator and the passing game scheme is his to direct. Therefore, if it is broken, fix it.

What does fall back on KF is the decision to move away from a system, and probably the guy in charge of that system, when he has 5 years of evidence that our passing game is seriously lacking.

You are exactly right. Why do changes always have to be next year with this group. So damned rigid and structured. God forbid they would make a change mid stream. It's like, "Oh crap, we're headed over the waterfall in the next mile or so. Oh well, this is the route we planned so nothing to do now but full steam ahead. Next time we'll go a different way. If we survive."

Yeah I'm not sure what the deal was with Soup and why he left. It's as if he and KF weren't a good fit. Not that they didn't get along so much but just didn't click. Which was too bad because when he came to Iowa he'd had quite the pedigree having came from Michigan and they had just spit out a handful of NFL receivers under him.

BINGO! Our TEs will be our best options next year. Need to use them all over the field.

Soup once said in a meeting, "I thought the point of offense is to score points?"

Davis rolled his eyes and Cirk told Soup to polish his resume the very next day.
