Excited for bowl, but let's look at next year

I think Vandenberg can throw just as well or better than Stanzi. Derby or McNutt will probably get some snaps at QB to give us some mobility at times. Keenan and Mcnutt will have a decent year catching the football. We will still be young but we have a great running back group, especially if coker hits the weights hard and wegher comes back. Our line, who over achieved this year will get older and better. Rogers will fill Morse's shoes very well i see no drop off there. The front seven on D will be very very very young. Daniels will be a monster inside and Morris will be even better than this year, he needs to work on pass responsibilities over the summer. Other kids will have to step up for sure. The secondary looks very bright with Sash, Micah, and Prater all coming back and maybe Law filling Greenwoods spot at safety. It sucks we lose a very good punter.

What are your predictions? Bowl game?

Im thinkin 8-4 if wegher doesnt come back, 10-2 if he does. Our front 7 will decide our record but our non conference is easy and we dont play penn sate, wisconsin, or ohio state. Our game vs. Nebraska will decide who plays Ohio State in the championship

Not a chance the Derby or McNutt take a snap under center next year unless we have a whole heap of injuries at QB.
I'm saying 8-4

my new practice for my own personal predictions on iowa football is to hope for the best and prepare for the worst...next season is a long ways away. I would be very very surprised if this coach puts mcnutt behind center. not saying its a stupid idea just saying i dont think it will happen. would love to see what derby brings to the table, people are still predicting he moves to LB, and Lord knows we could use the depth, but if he is this set on proving he can play QB, i would love to see it. missing OSU is a good thing, we usually compete well against PSU and wisky. excited to play Nebraska, we will have to see who is coaching michigan next year.

super excited for that rivalry game against purdue

Im not saying that like a regular QB. I was thinking like maybe 3-4 plays per game with a wildcat type thing. Vandenberg has a gun

I think we have a bit of a known commodity (maybe not the "who" amongst Hampton, ARob, Coker, Johnson, any new freshmen, but we know we've got decent production coming back) with our running game/OL. The loss of most of our front 4 is concerning, but it's positive that so many LB's got a lot of playing time this year...it will suit them well next season. If JVB can make a few plays per game without making big mistakes, I think we'll be ok, but I'm not predicting anything above 7-5.

A couple of points to the OP:

* In Greenwood's absence I think we could see either Jordan Bernstine or Tanner Miller next year.

* Wegher is not a "2 game swing"-type player. He came into the program with impossibly high expectations...I'd love to see him back with the program once he gets his personal life sorted out, but I'll believe that when I see it.

* The development of a 3rd WR (and maybe even a 4th) is going to be important. Right now we have very little behind McNutt and Davis.

* I'd love to see some innovation in the offense, but I don't know that we'll see that at Iowa, which is why I'm not convinced anybody but JVB takes a snap next year (barring blowouts/injuries). I have had this concern for 3 years, but at some point doesn't John Weinke (who was an Elite 11 QB) decide he's more than a clipboard holder and either win the starting job here or transfer somewhere to give himself a chance to actually PLAY college football?

im suprised he hasnt transferred already. if he hasn't won the job yet, I don't think there is any chance he wins it ever

I wouldn't factor Wegher into any discussions about next year. My gut says he's done playing football, at least at Iowa.

I would absolutely love to see Mcnutt run the wildcat but I think hell will freeze over before that happens under Ferentz.

I am not entirely convince VB will be the starter all of next year. If I remember correctly, some early reports this year were that Weinke was one of the most improved players. I am sure VB will be the starter at the beginning of the year as Ferentz always starts the more experienced guy. Yet everyone is assuming that we will get the VB from the Ohio State game, and not the VB from the Minny and NW games. I hope he is even better than he was in the OSU game, but I am not going to jump the gun and anoint him all conference QB yet. And as we all know, when Iowa has a QB that struggles, the team struggles.

Just looking at the schedule for next year, I have a hard time predicting any more than 2 losses: Nebraska and Northwestern. And both of those games will hinge on the opposing QB (does Persa fully recover from the achilles and does Martinez return to Nebraska). Our rushing attack should be one of the best in the country as our OL will be a much more experienced group and our RBs will be talented and deep, barring a series of injuries. Even if Wegher doesn't come back, I'm very excited to see what De'Andre Johnson will do given a chance.

Defensively we're a bit of a question mark. I'm not super concerned about the front 4 because I think Carl Davis could challenge for PT at DT if he can learn to play with a low pad level. Daniels and Binns will also be back and either LeBron Daniel or Donavan Johnson should be adequate at DE. The LBs will be young, but they were young this year. James Morris will be a stud and if Chirstian Kirksey can put on some weight he could be a very effective cover LB as well. Our DBs are in flux right now, depending on whether Sash stays or not. I think he will, but if he doesn't hopefully we can get Bernstine onto the field next year (though I heard a rumor he was moved to slot receiver a couple weeks ago). Prater and Hyde will make an effective corner combo and the coaches seem to be confident in Tanner Miller taking over for Greenwood.

I'm extremely doubtful they'd line up McNutt at QB. First of all, he's going to be a first team all Big Ten performer next year, and I don't see them wanting to take him away from receiving duties at any time. Secondly, the one throw he got this year was about 20 feet over the receiver's head. Not the kind of thing we want to replicate. I do think they put Derby in the backfield though. Maybe just inside the 5 yard line going in, or maybe when we go to a run-only offense. I think his abilities make him an ideal option QB.

I'm interested to see VDB.

I'm also curious about our RB situation. Coker has a LOT of potential, I think. Also, I'm wondering if Hampton will be in the mix? Has anyone heard any news about his recovery? Lastly, Wegherbomb is sort of a wild card. It would be great to have him back.

This year's RB situation sort of epitomized the whole season. We THOUGHT we had a heap of experience and depth going into the season...but that changed.

8-4 that is my prediction for every year now until KF shows that he can step on the throat of lesser oppoenents.

completely agree you midnight, well said. I for real think we have a shot at 10 and 2 if we dont quit halfway through the year if we lose an early game

Don't forget about Dom Alvis. He will be a stud.

55-0 against Minnesota last year didn't show you that? Or the trouncing we dished out to ISU and Ball State this year? What you're saying is that you won't predict better than 8-4 until KF shows that he can ALWAYS step on the throat of lesser opponents. That's fair, but it is an important distinction to make.

With all due respect we let Iowa State off the hook when it came to the score board for that game. That game should have been at least 50-0
