Everything you know about Iowa-NW is wrong

...has also happened in the GD era.
Absolutely correct, and it was last year @ NW. Not so much this year as the no huddle keeps us on a much more equal footing as far as the number of offensive plays run goes. The best way to beat a mobile QB is to keep him off of the field. Of course our scoring efficiency needs to be better. A 5 minute drive lets the D rest but if we don't put points on the board...

One thing is for sure... if they watched the OSU tape (which I'm sure they did) I have a feeling they are going to be throwing a lot of hook routes right in front of D. King because of the cushion he's been giving WRs.

OSU was the first game that we gave that cushion, and that we basically stopped blitzing. I'm hoping Parker goes back to the more aggressive coverage we saw earlier in the year. It may allow a pass or two over the top, but I don't want to spend my day at Kinnick watching the dink and dunk!!!

Hopefully the format isn't too terrible. They are KILLING us in 3rd down conversions. Solid TOP lead.

3rd down totals:

Iowa: 34-103 33%
NW: 73-133 54.9%

We gotta own 3rd down. We've done it very well this year, it needs to continue on Saturday.

The other number it'd be interesting to see for these games is total offensive plays. Given the 3rd downs, I'd have to think NW has run many more plays.

Idk about all that, what i do think the keys are this year is to take away their pass game and top. I dont think they can run it on us very well, so if we can take away any air attack and get a couple picks we will win the top.

I guess I read this differently than you...

I read it the same as you except you must think he says it the ONLY reason why NW has success vs Iowa. It's not the only reason. He was just going with what he knows best, offense. Obviously Iowa's O ha struggled as well plus key injuries.

Don't forget bad calls by the officials. Bad officiating has cost Iowa more games in the past 30 years than I can even count. Just off the top of my head - failure to call helmet to helmet on the Greene concussion cost us a fumble. Failure to call facemask on Wooton hit on Stanzi cost us a TD in 2009. BS holding call on long Wegher run took TD off the board in '09. Northwestern ran about 3 picks that should have been offensive pass interference in 2010 that cost us the game. In 2012, their line held on pretty much every play which gave them a ton of rushing yards and cost us the game. In 2005, I'm pretty sure they were offsides when they recovered the onside kick and there was a BS no call on a pass interference that would have given us a first down before Schlicker missed that FG that would have come close to icing the game.

Really, all I ask for is a well-officiated game. Northwestern CANNOT beat Iowa straight up, but if they get their usual help from the zebras, we're toast.

One thing is for sure... if they watched the OSU tape (which I'm sure they did) I have a feeling they are going to be throwing a lot of hook routes right in front of D. King because of the cushion he's been giving WRs. Their receiving core isn't that talented. I hope Phil isn't afraid to let the corners man them up. At least until one of them makes a mistake. Those damn 5-7 yard gains on 1st down are killers. Not only for a defense... for the average Hawkeye fan watching. It really puts me in a sour mood. Specially when I'm getting my drink on... Here's my thought process: Oh look there it is again... there's another one... and another... and another... and ohhh damn once again! SERIOUSLY!?!? WTF!?!? SOMEONE TAKE THAT AWAY FROM THEM!!! And from there on out my neighbors probably think my house is gonna be the next Villisca style tourism site ;)

And if the Iowa coaches watched any tape the way to beat NW is to blitz often, which would force Iowa to be in more man to man situations. Which let's face it is why we have given up so many big plays.

This is pretty obvious but the idiots that sit behind me can't comprehend this so I will post it.

When we blitz and don't get to the QB or force a bad throw we give up a huge play. That is the biggest problem right now is even when we do blitz we aren't getting to the QB. That has to change or any shot at 6 wins is out the window.

The data doesn't necessarily show that the dink and dunk isn't part of the equation. NW has used the controlled passing game to move the chains and keep their defense off the field. It'd be interesting to see the time of possession numbers and 3rd down conversions for the series.

This. When we talk about how the dink and dunk kills us, it's not because Northwestern scores a lot. It's that we don't ever seem to have the ball. We often bend all day before getting a stop and keep them from scoring a lot. But they just keep moving the chance and take what they can get.

The biggest officiating gaffe in 2009 was the Northwestern DB with a fistful of McNutt's jersey on our last comeback-attempt drive. Egregious, announce crew was incredulous, McNutt was all but screaming, and EVERY official missed it.

So what I gather from your other post is that we need to be really sh*tty on third downs for us to win. In our two wins we are 4/21 on third down, allowing 22/38 defensively on third downs. Also we have won the time of possession in three of those seven games, and lost all three, while our worst TOP margin was our biggest win.

I say we should spike the ball on third down a couple times tomorrow to minimize our TOP and our 3rd down percentage. Maybe if we convert zero third downs and have the ball for 15 minutes, we'll blow them out. /s (Actually I think you're right. Those were key factors last week too. We could've really been in position to win, but we had the ball for 25 minutes and allowed Ohio to convert 10/14 third downs, and never made them punt. That has to change.)

I agree with this. Certainly need to blitz often when Simien is in at QB because he's a much easier target. It will be interesting to see how Colter performs, but Iowa would be setting themselves up for failure if they prepare for him to be anything less than 100%. I'm sure some of this is execution, or lack there of, but I swear the Hawks always seem to meet up with QBs when they decide to play out of their minds.

I HATE being at a football game and getting stuck next to some fan or fans who are constantly yelling and have absolutely no clue what they are talking about. It's bad enough when someone yells the whole game, and they actually have a clue. It's 10x worse when the comments they are making are completely ludicrous. I was at a bar/restaurant the other night watching Game 1 of the World Series and this guy who was clearly wasted kept saying that Boston spray paints their logo in the outfield grass. He repeated it at least five or six times clearly wanting everyone in there to think he knows his stuff. I just ignored him, but it took everything in me not to be like "Seriously dude it's not freaking spray paint! It's just the way the groundskeepers mow the goddamn lawn!"

I rolled to over BS with this dude I tailgate with at Northwestern to see if he was ready to bail in the 3rd quarter this past Saturday. Minnesota reeled off a decent run on one play and this moron behind him kept yelling "sack him" and "we need to get some pressure." I've heard a lot of derp at a lot of sporting events, but this clown takes the cake.

NW's d-line is now 100% healthy with the surprise return of their best tackle, Sean McEvilly, who has been out since sept 14. He was listed as out in the early injury report this week, but evidently Fitz laid hands on him and he is cured. This complicates Iowa's rushing attack, big time. Add in a strong gusty wind that will keep us grounded for half the game, and you have a bad setup for an Iowa win....not good, gang.

Boo ******* hoo. Hawks win.

I like that setup for us. I think the worst possible set up for Iowa football is to be playing an inferior team at home and have no excuse for losing. If we're playing in bad weather against a team that is supposed to be better than Iowa, I feel better about our chances.

What can one glean from this info.. that it happened in both the KOK and GD eras? Uh, Ferentz.
