European Tour

The teams the Hawks are playing are being called All-Star teams. Can someone shed some light on the quality of the players they are playing? Age, skill level? Are they college level, post college? Any comparison to a certain level of player in the states?

Thanks. Just curious the level of talent they are competing against.

Not sure what constitutes an All-Star, but from what we've seen so far, it ain't basketball proficiency.

I believe that it's mostly made up of washed up former pro players in the Euro league. Guys past their prime, or still bouncing around and trying to make rosters. I can't say about the Swiss since I didn't see it, but the German team was NOT good. Like, think Dunder Mifflin in the warehose bad

Basketball-wise it's been pretty disappointing. 125-56, that's a high school girls basketball score. When the Hawks went four years ago I seem to recall there being a few closely contested games, and we lost at least once.

From a team chemistry standpoint, the trip is invaluable either way.

Do you remember the Pierre Pierce deal from the last time Iowa had their European trip? I would guess you would get a mix of everything.

The chemistry aspect of it is all I really care about. Now is a great time for FM to experiment with different lineups, take a look at guys at different positions.

Yeah, Pierre hit a 3 in OT to beat Iowa last time they were over seas. They we're playing actual active pro-teams that year. This is not the same type of competition.

Yeah, it is kinda obvious it isn't the same type of competition. Imo, it is more about what nikehawk21 is alluding to: chemistry and who can do what.

I agree with this. I'd like to see the team challenged a little bit. I'm not sure what conclusions, if any, we can draw from this trip and I'm not sure Fran can learn anything from the games.

GO HAWKS!!!

We may not be able to tell how good the team is overall but it's still interesting from the perspective of seeing who's outplaying who from the bigs. They are all playing the same level of competition so although it's not great, it's a level playing field for the iowa players to draw comparisons.

The leading scorer from the German all-stars vs Iowa was a guy named Richard Freudenberg. He played for 1 season at St Johns and then left the team. While at St Johns he never started, and averaged 1.3 points per game. The rest of the guys are mostly German natives so its hard to tell, but if the ceiling is 1.3 points per game at St Johns, then you can kinda understand where the rest of these guys are at talent-wise

For the swiss team, I couldn't find much on any of those guys. The leading scorer Nico Brauner played like half a year of high school basketball in Michigan back in 2012 as an exchange student, and then went home?

I'd say these guys are like D3 level of talent. When they say "all stars" they aren't the best players in German professional basketball. They aren't playing in the same German league as Aaron White, for example. White plays in the highest level of German basketball...the bundesliga

Thanks Mop. Yea, that really puts it into perspective.

Excellent details - Thank you!

This is what it's about. On the floor but especially off the floor. Get a bunch of guys that care about each other as team mates and helping the team win. That will help mute any minutes envy from within.

Don't quote me on this, but I thought I heard the broadcast mention a 40 year old guy for Germany. Seriously?

IIRC, yes. Some guy who'd been playing in one of the German leagues. Not the upper league, mind you. NONE of these guys were from the upper German league.

GO HAWKS!!!
