ESPN's Katz: Morrill, Gregory Would Listen to Iowa

I've heard Lon Krueger's name mentioned by some inside connections. Winner everywhere he's been!

Let's run down (metaphorically, not literally) the list of candidates:

Pearl - not interested
Mr. Davis JR - not interested
Villanova guy - not interested
Jake - not "flashy" enough and too many ties to McD
Drew - too "edgy" with recruiting techniques for our taste
Gregory - hasn't win enough lately
Morrill - no midwest connection
UTEP guy - no midwest connection, and linked to every other HC opening
Memphis guy - missed opportunity with him 3 years ago
Forbes - no DI HC experience

Jeepers, who's left? This could be depressing.

Gregory took over a VERY talented team when he got to Dayton. Oliver Purnell had them loaded and fresh off an NCAA tournament team. Brian took them to the NCAA the first year with Purnell's players and lost in the 1st round. Since?.......

Has only made the NCAA tournament once in 6 years.
Finished 7th or worse in the A10 4 out of those 6 years.
Starts semi hot and fades every single year

Have never been impressed by him when watching Dayton.

As a Dayton alum (Class of '82 - UD! VD! Clap, Clap, Clap!!) I have to agree with Cyclones 17. I have the chance to follow them closely and Gregory had a very good team returning this year. In fact, along with Xavier, co-favorites to win the Atlantic 10 . Remarkably inconsistant. Lost to Alford by 1 at NM New Years Day . Smoked Xavier at home in mid Feb but two weeks later lose to St. Louis at home. The Flyers appled down the stretch. A lot of talent. Horrible on the road. I believe they're on ESPN now in the NIT. I think we can do better.

Jon, FYI on Morrill.

Mike DeCourcey was on Soren Petro's show in KC before the Big 12 Tournament. He said if ISU fired McD that he thought Morrill would be able to recruit in a manner that would allow them to win at ISU. He said, I believe, that he is good at finding players that others might miss that can be pretty good players. He didn't sound like he was buddies with Morrill, like someone on this board mentioned when Katz or some other guy pimped him.

I can't remember everything he said re recruiting, but if he thought he could recruit to win at ISU, I would think that would mean he can win at Iowa. His definition of winning/success at ISU was like when Floyd/Eustacy were there.

ISU got Eustachy from Utah St. also, and we know how that turned out, though he was a decent coach. I bet most Clone fans would go back to the Natty Lite days in a heartbeat.

I watched part of the NIT game last night, and was impressed with Gregory's coaching.....announcers talked about how Dayton ran set offensive plays predominantly; I thought they said he ran about 12. Everyone I saw resulted in a good shot. Defensively they were tough as well.

I would move him up on my list after watching that game, although I know nothing about else about him. I do know I would like someone with head coaching experience, and my top names right now are, in no particular order, Hewitt-GT, Gottfreid-? (formerly AL), Wojcik-Tulsa. I don't think the others named are realistic (Drew, Dixon, Romar, Paschak, Keno.) I imagine Barbee is an option, but I've cooled on him.

LOL, johnas. I complain about the Flyers being a horrid road team and they go out and win for the first time in 44 trys in the Cincinnati city limits ( Cincy & Xavier). This team was loaded with talent. They should have made the Dance with that squad. That all falls on the coach. That being said, I'd sure get behind him!! I'd love to see Dixon. His style would fit in the Big Ten just fine.

It was an NIT game and they finally won in Cinncy. I went to watched them play at Xavier about 5 years ago or so. Out coached in the second half in that game. This Dayton team is to talented to finish 7th in the conference
