ESPN on Tebow

ESPN can very easily choose what "moves the needle". What they say goes. They didn't sign up with the SEC until after Fox snatched the Big Ten. Had they signed the Big Ten, they would have been talking about them all the time.

ESPN is not even close to a true news outlet. They're a business, plain and simple.

That is just absurd. In the first day of economics, they teach you that the market sets demand. If Espn had an economic advantage to marginalize Big 10 football, why does Espn broadcast 4 Big 10 games a week?

You don't think that a sports outlet that has a pseudo-monopoly on the market can determine what sells? Take the Tiger Woods Saga. I'm sure ESPN's ratings were just fine, but there wasn't one person that I met that wasn't sick of hearing about it after a week. Yet they kept going back to ESPN because it's just about the only option for sports news.

I'm not even saying that ESPN is anti-Big Ten. I think there are some commentators that are (Chris Fowler, Jesse Palmer, even though he's just more of an SEC homer), but as a whole the organization isn't.

But had they signed the Big Ten to that gigantic contract (which they wanted to do before the BTN), they'd be hyping the Big Ten, because they'd need to Big Ten to bring in big ratings.

I think ESPN is more pro-SEC than anti-Big Ten, if that makes any sense?

I agree with your last sentence. However, I agree with it because the SEC has a larger and more passionate fan base than the Big 10.

However, I don't think for a second that ESPN has a monopoly on sports news. Maybe 10 years ago, but the sports news market is so scattered right now, that anyone can find information about anything they want very easily without ESPN. That is one of the reasons ESPN only handles national stories, because they cannot afford to go into saturated niche markets. Stories that play nationally (like Tiger Woods, Tim Tebow, Yankees-Red Sox, Mike Vick, etc) get plenty of air on ESPN, and regional stories (breaking down the Iowa Hawkeyes roster, the NL Central race, How rookies are performing in camp) get play in niche outlets that ESPN cannot compete with (message boards, blogs, newspapers).

ESPN definitely has a monopoly on sports news. The people who post on message boards and read sports blogs make up a very small percentage of all sports fans. The casual sports fans get their news from ESPN, and ESPN is one giant conflict of interest. They have an healthy amount of influence in a lot of sports but none more so than college football.

Why, what's wrong with me? I lived in Iowa longer than anywhere else I have ever lived, and I went to HS in Iowa, so when people ask me where I'm from originally, I don't give them my life story, I say I'm from Iowa.

And I'm proud of that.

Well you're an annoying, ill-informed troll for starters. And you hang out where you are clearly not wanted or liked, so if you're anything in real life like you are on here I would be embarrassed to be from the same state as you. No offense.

No, a troll is someone who goes out trying to cause conflict. Despite what you may think, a troll is not someone who holds an opinion different from you. I never try and insult people are rile them up.

If you think I'm annoying, ignore me. If you think I'm ill-informed, discuss it with me. Unlike most of the internet, I am an adult, and am willing (hell, eager) to have a conversation.

I don't think I am neither unwanted nor unliked. I am interested in reading about Iowa sports, I think these boards have lots of interesting people, and you guys are fun to talk to. I come here because it is interesting and entertaining, as well as a reminder of my Iowa roots.

If you have a problem with my behavior, frankly, you're the one with the problem.

Like I said, you're very ill informed.

If the media doesn't have a love affair with Tebow and his story, why aren't they covering other athletes that have similar stories. There are other non-mormon players out there that are deeply religious, others that do missionary work every summer, why aren't they covered? I can think of two brothers that do/did play for Texas that are just like this. The Acho brothers are very religious, do missionary work, and are very good players. Of course there is only one of them here now as Sam has gone on to the Arizona Cardinals, but he did win both the Campbell and Wuerffel trophies last year while being named team MVP. There's really only two differences between Tebow and the Acho's. One difference is the Acho's play defense as opposed to Tebow playing QB. Yeah, Tebow put up crazy numbers. Defensive players, no matter how good, could put up numbers that crazy. The only other difference is that Tebow is white and the Acho's are black. Yeah, I played the race card, but how often do you hear the media talking about the good things minority players do? All you hear is the bad things they do. They gave some time to Myron Rolle when the was named a Rhodes Scholar. Can anybody ever name a time when a minority player doing something positive got half the air time Tebow did?

Sheeeeesh. Quite the rant. I need a beer.

The only difference??? One of the greatest college players at the most popular position. National Champion, Heisman trophy winner, and he did all this with a very unorthodox style. The Heisman winner gets 100x more coverage than the Cambell or Wuerffel winners every year no matter what race the winners are.

Have you seen this speech?

If the Acho's weren't getting enough media exposure than they should have purchased their own Super Bowl commercial like Tim Tebow.
