ESPN on Tebow

I know everyone here understands the bias ESPN has towards the SEC conference when it comes to football. I am listening to the Scott VanPelt Show talk about Tebow and them debating about him.

I started thinking what would the talking heads be saying about a B1G QB if the roles were reversed and Tebow was coming from the B1G instead of the SEC and performing like he is so far as a pro? I am guessing they would either A.) Not even see it as a story to talk about or B.) They would collectively say he is overrated and that the B1G just doesn't produce NFL caliber QB's (something along those lines)

I don't know about you but I am sick and tired of hearing about Tebow. For some reason this guy is getting an opportunity like none other and I just don't understand it. Am I missing something about him?

He's getting pub for the same reason Pryor is. They move the ratings needle. There is no conspiracy regarding the SEC and ESPN. ESPN makes it's money selling ads, so they talk about what gives them the most viewers. I don't understand what's so hard to understand about this.

Like him or not, he put up some insanely ridiculous numbers in college and isn't a giant ****** to everybody.

ESPN definitely has a love affair with Tebow. I think the OP is spot on that if this was a Big 10 qb the coverage would not be so extensive. I do appreciate that Tebow does not seem to have this huge ego and he truly seems to enjoy and appreciate the chance to be in the NFL.

I don't dislike the guy and I understand the numbers he put up in college in a system that fit his style but obviously that style is not translating to the NFL level as much as ESPN wants it to.

Video kinda sucks, but this wasn't a love affair.

This this 100x this. I know this doesn't fit into the victim mentality y'all up north seems to be born with, but ESPN is a bottom line business. There is no conspiracy to ice anyone out. ESPN is not going to cost themselves money to F with the Big 10. They cover who makes the money.

ESPN doesn't have a love affair with Tebow. America has a love affair with Tebow.

Also, wouldn't you say that many at ESPN are infatuated with Brady and Brees?

I was in Denver last week on business and happened to catch the Tebow debate quite a bit on local sports shows.

The general agreement was that he needed a lot of technique adjustment to be a successful starting NFL QB. (no surprise there). And those were significant enough that he probably wouldn't beat out Orton.

One guy said drafting Tebow was simply a ploy by the owner to gin up interest in the Broncos in the media and sell tickets. And from that angle, it was very successful. He went on to say, that the coach may be pressured to play him but if he didn't pan out, it would likely be the coach who took the blame.

Orton is the much much better option in Denver than Tebow is, but the people there are hard for him. I really don't get it. Orton put up good numbers last year, even though Denver was awful.

Tebow is getting a lot of attention from ESPN because he is one of the best college players ever who is struggling in the NFL right now. He is a 2nd string QB who most Denver fans want to start.

It is quite funny when people make claims that ESPN is pro-SEC. As has been mentioned, they're pro-ratings.

SEC is the best football conference in the nation with huge fans bases. Plus common fans are going to pay more attention to SEC teams because they're always battling for the title. It makes sense to cover them. People are going to watch.

Josh McDaniel made him a 1st round pick when at best he only had a 4th or 5th round grade.

10 or 15 years ago he would have been a project forced to sit and watch 2 or 3 years-it is completely different now.

The Broncos don't need any help selling tickets. They averaged 75k last year in a building that seats 76k.

They also OWN this town for media attention. Any time of year, no matter what any other team is doing, and the Broncos get the headlines.

As for Pat Bowlen himself, some suspect he's been going senile. That would be a far better explanation as to why the Broncos wasted a high draft pick on Tebow than anything else.

I thought "y'all" was from Iowa originally? Btw southern dudes look like complete tools with their hair combed over.

Espn is competing with the BTN, why the heck would they cover a league they're competing with?

Espn SHOULD be infatuated with Brady and Brees. Both have rings, MVP trophies, and considered top NFL qbs over the last decade.

If the media doesn't have a love affair with Tebow and his story, why aren't they covering other athletes that have similar stories. There are other non-mormon players out there that are deeply religious, others that do missionary work every summer, why aren't they covered? I can think of two brothers that do/did play for Texas that are just like this. The Acho brothers are very religious, do missionary work, and are very good players. Of course there is only one of them here now as Sam has gone on to the Arizona Cardinals, but he did win both the Campbell and Wuerffel trophies last year while being named team MVP. There's really only two differences between Tebow and the Acho's. One difference is the Acho's play defense as opposed to Tebow playing QB. Yeah, Tebow put up crazy numbers. Defensive players, no matter how good, could put up numbers that crazy. The only other difference is that Tebow is white and the Acho's are black. Yeah, I played the race card, but how often do you hear the media talking about the good things minority players do? All you hear is the bad things they do. They gave some time to Myron Rolle when the was named a Rhodes Scholar. Can anybody ever name a time when a minority player doing something positive got half the air time Tebow did?

Sheeeeesh. Quite the rant. I need a beer.

I tell people I'm from Iowa, but I'm not from Iowa originally. I have no idea what that hair thing is supposed to be about though...

Also, ESPN is competing with BTN the same way the Washington Generals compete with the Globetrotters. Doesn't ESPN get to pick what games they get to broadcast and give BTN the leftovers?

Please stop. We don't need people judging Iowa poorly just because they met you.
