ESPN/Katz Article: Iowa Not Shying from Expectations

Interesting article and Fran was more to the point than I've heard him previously about what he expects for the year. He puts it best when talking about Iowa's roster, saying that other teams might have more "stars" but Iowa's sheer volume of decent to good players should be advantageous for them. Will be a fun late fall/winter this year.

That can be a blessing and a curse. Sometimes stars are what it takes to win in Basketball. Two great players can have a greater impact than 5 good players.

Basketball is the ONLY game where one great player can turn a team around.

GO HAWKS!!

Nice to be on the national radar for the right reasons. It'll be one heck of a season if they can live up to it. I'm fired up and firmly in Frans corner.

But playing against a deep running team, 2 opposing stars can be worn out. I expect even more running out of Iowa this year to make that depth advantage work.

Being deep with a lot of good/decent players with experience are what gets those so-called mid-major teams deep into the tournament.

40 minute college games with time outs every 6 minutes don't really give you an opportunity to wear other players out. Not saying it's not possible, but it's certainly not a winning strategy.

Having experience and good shooters is what makes those mid-majors go deep. Typically, your average MM isn't going to have a deep bench, since not many talented players want to wait their turn at Bradley.

Those Butler teams that got to back to back championship games went 7 or 8 deep. In today's college basketball there is no such thing as a team loaded with good shooters.

True, but it's sometimes what keeps teams from Power 6 conferences out of the tournament, because the lack of star power costs them regular season games. If Iowa makes the tournament this year, that depth will be a major advantage.

Maybe he doesn't want to put pressure on the kid but Fran didn't mention Jok in his comments when talking about scoring.

Fran's said recently about Jok's scoring that he expects Jok to just "go off" in some games this year.

This Europe trip is perfect timing to incorporate Uthoff and Jok into the mix. Can't wait for the season to start!

I will take a team which is deep with quality players over a team with 2 star players all day every day. If 1 of the star players is off and/or the defense is good enough to slow 1 or both of the star players down the team's in trouble. The rest of the guys are used to these 2 carrying the team and don't have to step up with the season on the line. A team playing 11 can have 3 guys in foul trouble or playing awful and go with the other 8 and not miss a beat...all IMO.

Indiana proved that point in the tourney this last season... When Zeller was struggling, they had a hard time finishing the game.
