He wanted to play quarterback. Not sure why people can't appreciate someone wanting to see a dream through.

For the record it was a shot at people on this board that were freaking out when he left and that he was a better QB than anyone else that we had, etc.

It wasn't a shot at Derby it was a shot at some on this board that thought we were losing the next Brad Banks or Tim Tebow.

I think some people believed he would have been better on defense and the staff should have convinced him to stay and play defense.

I think some people believed he WAS better at QB than Vandy or anyone else as you stated.

But also from what I saw, very few people were actually mad at AJ for following his dream. I think a majority of people just wanted to blame the coaching staff for him leaving to add to their own list of reasons to want KF gone.

Here's a thought I had- if Derby would have been around for this season, do you think the coaching staff would've benched JVB to at least give Derby a shot (considering he would have moved back to QB again)?

Why do you think he would have moved back to QB?

Because of this...

If Derby was still at Iowa, he wouldn't be a QB. He left because he wasn't getting his shot at starting.

He was #2 on the depth chart, then got passed by Rudock and was moved out of the two deeps to the 3rd QB.

I don't believe they would have benched Vandy to see AJ Derby if Rudock was better to move spots on the two deep and move AJ to defense they wouldn't have moved him back this past fall.

I'm aware of all this, trust me. I didn't just start following Iowa football this season. I was using hypotheticals. Let's say AJ decided to stick it out and thought he was going to be able to improve enough where he could play QB, and decided to switch back. I was just wondering to myself if they would've given him a shot, since JVB obviously wasn't getting it done. Based on this last season though, I would bet no. So stupid question on my part, shouldn't have even brought it up.

Hypothetically, no. If you didn't just start following Iowa football this season, deep down you already knew that answer Ferentz is stubborn and married to his decisions/style.

I think hypothetically, if he were to play, I think he would have been able to probably extend a few more plays with his feet but his passing I don't think would have been as good. Even in the JUCO level he only had 46% passing, I don't think at the B1G level it would have been better.

As another poster wrote, he wasn't/isn't the second coming of Brad Banks or Tim Tebow. Not saying he can't get better and prove himself but at this point I just don't see it.

No it's not a stupid question but the fact remains that Derby wanted to play QB, went to a place that allowed him to do that and he has an offer from Houston based on his year of playing QB. Like KF or not, it sure looks like most college coaches feel the same that KF did about Derby's ability to play QB and that is why he only has one offer.

Again I am not ragging on the guy for following his dream, I'm sure it was a very hard decision for him and I think it's great that he was able to make the tough decision to leave his comfort zone that was IC and being around his family to go follow his dream.

At least as of right now.........
