ESPN Chopping Block Hopeful

If we could get just 10,000 Hawkeye fans to each donate $20, that money along with her salary would probably save ESPN close to half a million dollars to make sure Beth Mowins is on the list of shit-canned announcers. I realize she might already be on it, but the extra insurance would be worth it.

I'm in, guys. Come on and pony up.

I like Ms. Mowins, I think she does a good job.

She's not so bad. She likes Iowa. So, every once in awhile she announces that Iowa will be going for it on 3rd and 10. We're all human.

We know. You come running every time there's a Beth Mowins Sucks thread. Which is quite often, btw; maybe there's a reason for that? :)

And you can't bring gender into this like you did last fall. Beth Mowins isn't qualified to shine Robin Roberts' shoes. That woman can announce sports.

Beth Mowins, however, sucks total ass at announcing games and knows nothing about football. The only thing even remotely comparable in shittiness is Mike Mayock and his pet lisp.

Ok. Back to Beth Mowins. I've got CP87's $20 bucks to chip in.

I hope it is these three for sure. I don't think they bring anything to the table anymore in terms of constructive reporting or journalism. Its the good old boys club and who they know there is no substance at all.

Stephen A Smith
Chris Berman
Dick Vitale.

I made no mention of gender; bringing it up as a possible factor influencing perception certainly changed no one's mind previously, and I would not expect it to this time. I just thought I would stand and be counted as a member of Team Beth-Mowins-Ain't-That-Bad. Good luck with your fund-raising.

In all reality though, nobody wants or expects any journalism out of ESPN. Gone are the days when Dick Schaap actually did some interesting pieces, and the rest of the "Sports Reporter" elite like Albom were just a bunch of wind bags who thought they were Pulitzer candidates.

Stephen A. Smiff and Berman can stay as long as they want in my eyes, because I don't watch nor pay any attention to their garbage. What I (and 99% of sports fans) care about is what ESPN should have been caring about or they wouldn't be in this position to lay off hundreds of employees...announcing. Is it really too much to ask for a D-1 football announcer to know what an option is or not wonder out loud if a team is in four down territory when they're losing by 7 with 20 seconds left?

I can turn the channel when Jemele Hill and her side piece start debating racism on their version of SportsCenter, but I can't change it when Beth Mowins is calling a Hawkeye game.

Beth has improved over the years. She is passionate about CFB as well. I'll giver her an ok. She's not an elite CFB caster, but how many are?

At the same time ESPN has gone to far injecting the gals into the studio. Often they are dingbats and should not be on the show. But ESPN has an agenda, to hell with viewer preferences.

Chris Berman's retiring from full-time work at ESPN anyway.

They hire guys that have personality and these guys all have that at least. Guys and gals who are milquetoast don't last long in this arena.

......and ESPN has a political agenda. You'll find some who have quietly moved on from their non-sense. Chris Speilman is one. They said nothing of cost cutting. They want people who tote the company line on social issues.

Sports has served as a useful vehicle to identify and change minds on social issues, there is no greater example than Jackie Robinson, but what passes for many social issues today are more like pet peccadilloes for people, and the voices carrying on these pet causes are simply grating, not transforming. ESPN is on the backside of its curve, it's not going away, but its influence has been diminished - in all arenas.

They have so darn many football games that they do I doubt they'd be chopping many announcers of the games. They probably don't get paid a ton as it is anyway. It's all those former player celebrity 'analysts' and studio show hosts that they have on the books that they are paying crazy amounts of money for they can easily cut back on. They've gone to doing so many opinion type of shows it's crazy. For some reason advertisers were willing to throw them a ton of money for those time slots. They'll have to start changing one way or another. They've lost a ton of viewers the last few years. Mostly due to cord cutters and people being able to a la cart their tv programing more. But also just with how political they've gotten on things. They've turned into MTV almost with how they have began interwebbing politics with sports. Doesn't matter if your liberal or conservative if your going to do that then your alienating about a third to half the country and I don't see how that can help ratings. They made fun of Jordan years ago for saying 'republicans buy shoes too' Too bad ESPN didn't learn from his example...

Agree, but your example is of a sport itself and a player involved with it. Sports TV shows are a totally separate thing and I would file them strictly under media rather than sports.

Jackie Robinson did something great for society, arguably at great risk to his livelihood. And at a basic level it was intertwined with the greater sport itself (in this case baseball). The fact that it affected to a certain degree civil rights as a whole is both relevant to sports in general as well as society.

Bob Costas on the other hand, preaching to me about gun laws during halftime of an NFL game is everything Jackie Robinson was not. That sawed-off Napoleon was there only to hear himself speak, because his topics had nothing to do with sports, he was trying to make himself out to be some sort of golden-age moral lighthouse, and also because no one has ever tuned into a football game to hear someone else's politics and be told how to live their lives. Sports is supposed to be an escape from that shit. Yes, I'm looking at you, Jemele Hill.

Sports broadcasting should be about broadcasting sports. If I want social commentary and hashtags...trust me, there's no shortage of it out there.

And as sports broadcasting goes, Beth sucks at it. Royally.

If Janet Jackson had kept her bra on this would be a moot point because we could all mute the TV and listen to Dolpheimer's and Podolak get boozed up and call the games. At least they're Hawk fans.

When did Robin Roberts ever do mens' sports? She was an ESPN sportscenter anchor and did play by play for womens' college basketball .......I guess I don't get the comparison. The Jessica Mendoza comparison I kinda get, but Robin Roberts???

Berman is gone for sure. I feel bad for him at the height of his popularity he had an opportunity to move on to greener pastures and he turned it down to be loyal to ESPN. The last several years people see him as a buffoon, but it wasn't always like that he was one of those personalities that drove ESPN. Now that loyalty means nothing and he is getting kicked out the door in his 60's.

Well, I do have favorite Beth Mowins moments. With Minnesota down seven, and under minute to go on the Iowa 42 yard line, and facing a fourth down, Beth insightfully talks about how long the field would be from this position. You could hear her doing the math...42 plus the seven for the hold, then 10 for the end zone...why that's 59 yards. You could feel the silence as she reasoned through everything, "now, if Minnesota kicks a field goal, gets the onside kick, then kicks another field goal, that would put them, wait, they would still lose"...Like the cracker jack play by play analyst she is, she then comes back with "I think they are going to go for it." Yeah Beth, everyone figured that out about a minute ago, except you. God bless her.
