ESPN B1G Preview (Iowa picked 4th)

I'm high on Iowa this season and think they will be better than last season. But not as much as ESPN, wow. They gotta chub for the Hawks:cool:

I agree with Mike and JG10 in regards to White. I think he is what he is, maybe slightly better as a 4 but not much. I'm more interested in the improvement of Woody, Jok & Uthoff.

In regards to White, I'd be interested to see his stats from the free throw line. I think early in his career he made a living at the line. I think teams learned of course to give him space and to make him earn it and finish because he shoots a high % from the line.

He still runs the floor and will be scrappy enough to get his 10 a game but I don't expect much more.

He was 27th in the nation in Fouls Drawn his sophomore year at 6.5 per 40 mins. Last year he dropped off to 326th, which is still good but not elite, at 5.2 per 40 mins which is more in line with his freshman numbers. So there's probably some truth in what you're saying. He would play to contact rather than just trying to finish at times last year and I think both refs and players became more aware of it.

Anything can happen in college basketball. Look at UConn ... Suffered a 40-point blowout loss toward the end of the season and then won it all ... UConn did not have a roster loaded with NBA talent. That's what I love (and hate) about college basketball is the parity now that you have so many 1-and-dones; so many transfers, etc. Everyone has a shot. March Madness has never been so Mad! ... Go Hawks ... The drinking koolaid part of me thinks we could be the surprise of the conference ... it's last year's finish that sort of took the sugar out of my koolaid ... But I think the talent is on the roster ... :)

I still think a guy who isn't mentioned nearly enough on here is Clemmons. I think he will be the reason for why the Hawks will have a better year than last. I understand that last year was a tough one for him but, from what I have read, he took last year's adversity to heart and has worked to improve his game. It's important to remember the pleasant surprise he was during his Frosh campaign. I have this gut feeling that he will have a major impact on this team this year, IMO.

Tom Izzo is probably looking in Mirror in his office and say What have I done to get #5 behind Iowa!:p
Don't worry. I'm sure he'll instruct his players to literally grab, hack and claw (while the refs look the other way) in an effort to make up lost ground. (see 2013 B1G tourney game for reference)

Last season's year end collapse to go along with the departed players has caused a lot of folks to be pessimistic about the upcoming season. Throw in the near misses on the recruiting trail and people have become a bit disappointed with the momentum of the program. Nothing that a great early season showing won't fix. People will hop back on as the momentum swings back in the team's favor. I for one think the team will be good enough to make some noise this year and make the dance. If I had to bet I'd say they would finish close to last year's record and maybe a bit better if players are able to figure out their roles early on. This should be a fun season to see who emerges. I can't wait.

Pretty much. A strong early season showing will help optimism, but we had that last year and the last month of the season was miserable. I want to see this Iowa team play a complete season.

The pieces are there (IMO) to be a very good team but I honestly am not quite sure what to expect. At this point, I have to trust that last February/March was an aberration and that the team will bounce back, but I think it's going to be an interesting season. One way or another. If the team struggles, it's going to get nasty around here, but I'm hoping we're talking NCAA seed this coming March instead, not whether or not Iowa will be in.
